Jordan Goodwin commits to SLU

I think the whole Northwestern thing was just words based on how the Internet world reacted (many Illini fans). All signs pointed to Illinois having the lead in his recruitment until probably the last couple of weeks. He could've been the next Denzel Valentine, yea, he's shorter, but in the college game, he could be a 2 or a 3 if he grows another inch or two.

Any objective college bball fan could look at this situation and say he made a dumb decision.

However, the same thing could be said for Tilmon verballing to Illinois, so I guess we're even.

But the thing you can say about Tilmon is he picked loyalty over the blue bloods. He reciprocated the loyalty that has been shown to him and clearly wants to help the state school.

Yes, Goodwin is near the STL area but SLU has not been recruiting him until more recently since the coaching change and now more recently, since his AAU coach went to SLU.

Not an accurate comparison at all imo. That said, I have a hard time getting worked up about a decision made by a 17-year old. I commend Groce for his efforts. Next.

JG is a good player, but he is not as good as a player as Quintin Richardson. So to say he is a weak team to the NCAA is foolish. Ben Simmons couldn't take an LSU team with much more talent to the NCAA.

When we landed Javon Pickett I felt the wing position had become pretty crowded. To have landed JG would of been to many players for that position, possibly squeezing somebody out.

Lets get a PG, a young big, and a 5th year transfer big and all is good. That way we can roll a scholly for 2018 and hopefully get two great players.

Well, recruiting is a pretty dirty business. Some coaches will say and do whatever they can to win. At least our coach has some scruples. It takes more guts to run a clean program these days than to sell out.

So I guess every recruit needs to go to the school that recruits him the longest. At least in this case, because the logic works in our favor. The utter homer-logic on this board is fantastic, especially in threads discussing a lost recruit. This particular thread is priceless.

The way I look at it who ever hired Tate was going to get JGood. It is obvious Groce is not going to play that game, it is a slippery slope once you start.

But I can also see the appeal to JGood to attend SLU. He will be the attraction in a big city, that is more his hometown than Champaign. He might feel that is his NBA experience.

I like his game folks, but I've seen to many better players not have the impact at the next level. In the end I think he made the best decision for himself, and I say this with no hidden meaning.

It's not about being a homer, it's about telling it like it is, which is, if you are from the state of Illinois, as a high school basketball player, you should have some some pride in wanting to stay home and help the state school get back to its former glory days. We are not that far removed from 2005. Yea, it's harder for the younger generation to remember the Flyin Illini, heck, I was born 1 year before they went to the Final 4. But, as I watched Illinois over the years, I learned more about the Flyin Illini and take a lot of pride myself in the past success that this school has had.

You would think bball players in this state would want to help the state school get back to its former glory days and get the ship rolling. Sadly, too many players these days get caught up with other thoughts on their mind.

Didn't he show loyalty to his city and long time coach?

Amazing we didn't get this much melt down when we didn't land Keita Bopp from Bloomington who went to OSU. KB was ranked around #25.

Nonsense, and I've been a diehard fan for 35 years, an alum, who also worked for UI and was very close to the program. If you want today's players to attend UI we should strive to give them a reason to attend, not the other way around. HS students and players owe nothing to the university.

Not that far removed from 2005? Are we kidding here? We have become irrelevant in college basketball since then and we are already in 2016.

We should applaud and cheer every athlete who decides to wear the O&B, yet HS students/players owe nothing to UI as far as burden of responsibility.

Could not have said it better myself. We were previously talking how ucla had final four appearances in 06 and 08 and how that was half an 18 year old's life in the past. 2005 is supposed to mean something to them?

It's amazing how out of touch some people are. Maybe I'm blessed to be in the loop cause of my job, but kids are not required to be loyal to where they grew up. In fact, many kids move around a lot, and even though they might be in high school somewhere for 4 years, they might still not consider that place their home.

Heard something interesting re: JGood and the Illini...

Apparently there may have been some 'low-touch' communication over the past week between his camp and some intermediary or person in the Illini camp regarding Travi$ Ford'$ pitch to JGood and whether or not the Illini could match.

I'm told the Illini may have relayed that they won't do it, pulled out perhaps a few days before the announcement, and hence JGood not listing us in his final 2 yday.

I'm also told the Illini may have done some 'media management' here, by not letting out a few days before that they were out, and making it seem more like a rigged coup by Travis Ford at the last minute, as opposed to perhaps somewhat of a back and forth...I guess painting him in the worst light possible lol

Let me ask this - if this is true and also what you said about Tilmon is true, then not matching on Jgood cost you both players. That would be the worst move of all time, wouldn't it be? Again, I'm assuming that we play that game for a minute... If we do play that game I'm sure we could match and chose not to. But if it might cost you Tilmon, you have to match.

In my view, Tilmon is a man of his word and we weren't going to match for the right reasons, or weren't asked to match. I think the latter is more likely since the AAU coach move by Ford is something that can't be countered.

Okay, this thread is weirding me out now. I too had a dream the other night that I shouldn't share, but now feel obligated to share it here.

I was being chased by Warren Carter under the St. Louis Arch which was, oddly enough, connected to the Assembly State FarmHall. Warren Carter chased me on top of the :ah: where Coach Groce was sitting with The Chief. I stopped and JG got up and punched me in the nose for having a dream with Warren Carter in it, and The Chief, wearing a jet pack, launched himself into a orange and blue sunset. :noidea:

I think you all misunderstand. I didn't say that they have an obligation or requirement to play for Illinois but this has been a problem for many years now. But, you would hope that they would have more pride like the Flyin Illini did followed by the Peoria connection followed by Dee/Luther/Powell/Augustine.

Nobody misunderstood. Sorry, you are what you write on a board and what you wrote was silly. When I was looking for a college, I was interested in WHAT IT WAS GOING TO DO FOR ME. Nothing else. To expect some junior in HS to do otherwise, just because he's a basketball player and you'd like him to attend your favorite college is ridiculous.

Losing out on Goodwin is a blessing in disguise for our program.

Think about that for a minute before you launch arrows.
