Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

Missing on a PG didn't help in that game last night. Ty is going to have a learning curve, but maybe more importantly is the trade off we made. We took Ty away from where he was most effective last year. He was a junkyard dog getting rebounds and second chance points down low. He would try to drive from the wing. He is now up top and there is no clear replacement for his previous role.
Oddly, he was in position to do what he does best at the end of the game and passed it out for a missed 3. I wonder if he is now thinking he should be passing instead of shooting?
You have to take the points in that situation. Shannon did the same thing with about 20 seconds to go with the same result. Illinois left 4 points on the floor in the last minute of the game.

Far more enjoyable game to watch for me than most games last year. I'm still bullish on this team for the rest of the year, just got to clean up some of the silly mistakes and self-inflicted momentum killers (missed layups, turnovers).

Ty did what he needed to and is only going to get better, he's a future pro if he develops a jump shot. Hawkins.....still does some soul crushing things.

No one is gonna out work that kid … Ty will only continue to get better … And I agree - he’s getting closer …

But in order to beat a team like Marquette … Ty has to be your 4th guy … Maybe your 3rd …

Elite guard play … Marquette has about 4-5 guards that would start for us …
Plain and simple, you can't miss back to back years on recruiting a certain position. In many ways I think what we're seeing isn't too far off from the issues Weber had where all the eggs are put in one basket and when we miss, it's more of a scramble to try patching up the hole. You still do get good players, but they don't necessarily fit in the framework of what you're wanting your team to be. Brad's been a good recruiter overall, but his roster construction has been shaky as of recent years

Saw plenty of positives from last night that keeps me hopeful about how high our ceiling is. Marquette looks like a legit national title contender but even then I still feel like they made some lucky shots.

Hard to say they are overrated...when we can beat #1 Kansas but not Marquette
Anyone can beat anyone on a given night. Cool thing about cbb.

I was impressed by them but where they're ranked now indicates a #1 seed caliber team. Not sure I see that. Seems like a team with long, quick guards and/or any kind of inside presence could give them issues.

I reserve the right to be wrong though.

I feel like Ty is getting closer.
The thing i love about Ty is this young man plays to his strengths. He doesn't take bad shots, make many poor passes and keeps working to get better. The only phase of his game that he can't avoid is his poor free throw shooting but outside of that the shots he takes are good shots for his team. Ty is trying to improve and he has been in several areas.
Mental mistakes and careless choices and turnovers are what is frustrating from our tenured players. Ty doesn't have many of those like that pass out when he had a lay in late in the game last night but at least I feel he will learn from it. I wish others would too.

I’m a huge BU fan, but I feel like he has definitely failed in coaching body language for CoHawk. He should have been coached that each time he throws his hands up after a turnover or foul, his butt goes to the bench. It’s not an issue for a player to show emotion, question call, or complain once in awhile (they’re competitors) but he does it incessantly, and poor body language from a team “leader” effects the team.

The biggest issue that I saw on both ends of the floor is that Marquette was able to get dribble penetration which required help defense and they made smart passes to high percentage shots / dunks (48% from 2).

We were not able to really get any dribble penetration, were forced to shoot a ton of 3's (same problem different year) or low percentage shots (37% from 2).
Marquette shot 37% on 2s (10-27)), while we shot 40% on 2s (10-25).

I’m sure Hawkins has been covered by plenty of posters, but I have the sneaking suspicion that this season will go as CoHawk goes. We get the good CoHawk and we can beat anyone. An average CoHawk and we will still get our share of wins in the tough games throughout the season. Get bad CoHawk and not sure we can beat top teams in or out conference — and we’ll struggle against teams in the tier just below that. Buckle up, we are at the mercy of the mercurial Coleman Hawkins. Just have to hope he can string some good CoHawk games together in the tourney.

Plus it is annoying as hell to watch. Tres Tinkle on Oregon State was like that (probably not even quite as bad), and it drove me nuts.

We got outscored in the paint because we seldom go there. Need to improve on this plus our offense has 4 perimeter players and 1 in the paint. Not much screening or driving or much of any movement. Against Kansas we drove a lot and were fouled a lot.

But in order to beat a team like Marquette … Ty has to be your 4th guy … TJ, Domask, and it just feels like we expected that 3rd guy to be Coleman and he’s just not it … We really are missing an elite guard who can just take someone off the bounce and go get one IMO … And while Ty is working on that … He’s not there yet …

I wonder if this was the idea with taking Harmon? I don't think anyone expected him to be elite, but as an upper classman I hoped he might be that 3rd or 4th scoring option. Of course there was going to be a bump in competition, but so far he doesn't look like the guy in those highlight clips from his time at Utah Valley.

Also, just want to add, I do think Coleman is a good player. I just think he wants to be something that he isn't. Maybe he thinks his path to the NBA is as a perimeter oriented point-center?

But the best game of his career, in my opinion, was in the BTT loss to PSU last year. He took 12 shots inside the arc and was attacking the openings in the defense. It was beautiful. I was really hoping that game would be an epiphany for him.

If he can get back to that attacking style he showed against PSU instead of trying to orchestrate the offense from outside like a quarterback reading the defense, he'll be a solid 2nd or 3rd option for us.

Bummer that we lost, and we have a TON of potential. However my mind is still boggled that we did not bring in a relatively high-level PG. Couple that with the fact that we are still relying on threes way too much, and either can't, or don't want to get points in the paint, make me think we're looking at last year's team all over again.

Long way to go, and maybe once these guys gel, we'll see a different team. Going to be a fun year (I hope), and will be interesting to see this team evolve.

A PG doesn't just handle the ball & set up the offense. He has the ability to get people in a position where they can utilize their strengths. Can you imagine how lethal Goode could be if he had a guy like Kolek setting him up? That's what this team is missing and why there will be nights where they really struggle offensively. Still feels like a team that can hang with anybody when everything is clicking but can lose games when they have to try to manufacture points.

Correct. I switched over to the 1st half for a couple of minutes of the Kentucky/ Kansas and within 45 seconds Kansas had run a pass to the wing with a pick on the opposite side and a downpick for a reversal to the top and the classic high low to Dickerson.

I mean Shannon can absolutely run pick and rolls we just never seen to ever actually run pick and rolls.

They should have been constantly running 2 man game pick and rolls last years with Shannon and Mayer and probably should be doing the same this year with Shannon and Domask(Goode would also be ideal for pick and pops).
He can run some, for sure. His handle is too loose to do it full-time, IMO, and he has a tendency to put his head down and just straight line drive to the rim, at which point if he doesn’t blow by everyone, it just comes down to whether or not he gets a whistle.

Coleman could have left but he stayed and I'm glad he did. I do agree he can have a major impact but I still think with the additions of Domask and Quincy we are not completely relying on Hawkins. Clearly someone else like will need to take a jump and pitch in if Hawk has an off night but he will have good nights too. Hopefully Goode, DGL, Amani, Dain, or Ty can on those nights. I really hope Amani and DGL can get some tick in our easier games.

After BU comments about playing anyone who will offensive rebound I certainly expect more time for Amani and Quincy. BU is clearly frustrated at how we rebound on both ends. I believe him when he says that. Sometimes the bench is the best way to send a message .
