Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

We need Hawkins to get the mentality , confidence and ability to play smart like Brian Cook did. He has the ability but after 3 years I am not chucking that Kool aid anymore. We will have his moments but we need that on a consistent basis. I think TSJ and Domask are the only 2 I expect that from.
Hawkins is almost Cook’s height, but that’s where any similarities end.

No he is not. Hawk is a 42 percent shooter from the field. Kenny Norman or Deon Thomas was but Hawk just needs to stick.to what he is good at and get better at what he needs to. That's what I admire about Rodgers. He us getting better in practice before he try to do what he needs to do better in games
If you want to go to the shot chart, let's do it.
He just, minus Syracuse last year, doesn't play that role much. But he's very effective in the paint.

He can dribble, run, jump., physically is likely as good or better athlete but after that give me Cook by a mile because he reacts, played smarter and confident. That us kind of the point. They have similarities physically but that is it

From a coaching standpoint:
- Can’t have the easy twos they got over and over
- very worried that BU overestimates Goode and Domask defense

From an execution standpoint:
- make layups
- less unforced turnovers
The easy twos were not easy.
Kolek is a wizard getting to the bucket and Cam Jones hit a few very tough layups as well. I don’t know what Brad could have told them to help

I think even pinning it would've been a goaltend the second it hit the backboard but 🤷‍♂️
Haven’t read through the thread, but have a question. On Dainja’s goal tending call, as the ball clearly was not going to hit the rim, if he’d grabbed it instead of swatting it, it would’ve been a clean rebound, right?

I only saw one replay, but I thought the ball was coming off the backboard not going toward the rim when Dainja touched it. I'd like to see it again to see if I'm wrong, but I didn't think it was a goaltend in real time or on replay. I also might not know how that is called normally, but the rulebook explicitly requires the ball have a chance to go in the situation that a ball is touched by a defender after the ball has touched the backboard.

From the 2023-2024 Men's rules book:
Section 15. Basket Interference and Goaltending

Article 3. Goaltending

C. When the ball contacts the backboard and any part of the ball is above the rim during a field goal attempt, it is considered to be on its downward flight. In such a case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched by a player as long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.

Edit:
Disclaimer: Obviously not why we lost. I just thought it was called wrong and looked at the rule book.

Lol. One game vs a career. Lol I think if he could do that every game Brad would have in there. I doubt you saw Snake and Deon our all time scorer. It isn't close
.Good night ILL. If we are gonna be good Hawkins isn't our 2nd or even 3rd best player. TSJ, Domask and Quincy are. All B10 TSJ. ALL 1st valley Domadk and all ACC Quincy. They gotta lead us by example. I think they can

You aren't going to beat Top 10 teams with an 5-10 min stretch like we had at the end of the game. Hell, you aren't going to beat Top 25 teams.

If we play a clean game and TSJ makes half his layups, that was a W. CoHawk was sleep walking in the first half.

Unfortunately, I completely agree that this is exactly the kind of game that SMFH comes in and ignites a run with his ball hawking....but it is what it is.

We gave up so many drives to the paint in the first half....but that Kolek dude is gonna finish top 5 NPOY. He is no joke.

He's a high percentage back to the basket scorer but rarely ends up in that position.
And wow Domask has a lethal turnaround from the ft line. If only we could get him iso'd there more.
Hate seeing Coleman catching it so much at the high post - you can feel the hamster wheel turning inside his head as he tries to orchestrate from there. It’s rough having an offense that schemes getting paint touches via the dribble- drive when you don’t have good ball handlers. Maybe get those touches by, I don’t know, scheming for post entries.

Rodgers passing up an open layup on a must-score possession tells you all you need to know. He's not a scorer in this level.

Likely going to have same profiles as last year, where it's a good defensive team, but not so good that a good offensive team is going to be able to score on them. And on offense, there's a clear lack of a Point Guard along with the consistent issue in the Underwood era that they are not able to consistently scheme good offensive possessions that will result in high percentage plays... this means that even if playing a bad defensive team, there isn't much of an expectation on my end that they'll make the opposition pay.

Offense generally consists of (A) Shannon (or someone) trying to play "hero ball" and seeing what happens, (B) passing around the perimeter until someone takes a three point attempt or (C) some sort of offensive rebound and second chance attempt (god willing depending on opponent).

8 Assists and 15 Turnovers tonight. Going to be days like this. A game Illinois was favored in a home game, but Marquette does rank highly and their best player was healthier than the lines likely anticipated. Likely would have been more lopsided earlier on if not for some silly unforced misses at the rim by Marquette along with poor shooting from both three and the free throw line.

Man with some of those makes… he’s gonna have some 4-14 nights. Those aren’t easy or necessarily good looks. But they just continued to fall.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but is Dain sort of out of the rotation? Or bad matchup for him tonight?… Both?…

I'm bummed but not mad.

Marquette is good. I'm probably in the minority, but I think they're a little overrated right now. But still a quality, experienced team. No shame in losing a hard fought game to them.

It's just disappointing because we had a chance to steal that one and the reasons we didn't were largely in our control. Whether we improve upon those things will be the difference between a good and a great season.

I am worried about Coleman though. I've defended him on here since his sophomore year but he's just kind of a liability right now. I feel bad for him. I've never seen our crowd turn on one of our own players like they did with him tonight. Hope he can turn it around because we need him.

Hawkins and Shannon BOTH needed to be way more aggressive going to the basket..... I was screaming all night at the screen for them and a few other Illini to DRIVE to the basket, draw the foul..... It was VERY frustrating..... not a single Marquette player was close to being in foul trouble.... No idea why we didn't try to establish Dainja as a post presence tonight..... We were very passive as a team tonight..... we will NOT win if all we do is wait for the other team to screw up....... We had our opportunities, we failed wholeheartedly to take advantage of them....

So frustrating seeing him complain to his teammate about his own turnover instead of getting back on defense. He's just so lazy with the ball in his hands.

Last year ... Between Skyy and Mayer ... Coleman kind of got a pass from me but it is year 4 ... He is not mature ... He never takes responsibility ... He chucks stupid shots ... Tries to hit home runs instead of singles ...

I want to see more Hansberry going forward and less Hawkins if he continues to play like this ...
