Maryland 76, Illinois 67 Postgame

Yeah, the offense was not as good today. To me, they looked mentally tired and I think there is a couple of reasons for that. This game is a great wakeup call going forward, it cannot happen again. To be honest though, they did miss some wide open shots in the second half and a lot of the bounces went Maryland's way, which is what you need to win on the road against good teams
What is the difference between looking "mentally" tired and "physically" tired. I personally thought we just looked tired and slow.

Exactly. If BU throws those two kids to the wolves and they perform poorly, he'd be roasted and rightfully so. Neither of those guys have shown the ability to play big in a big time game. I think they'll be fine players in a couple of years. As we sit here today.....you go with your seniors and vets. Those guys need to perform.
It’s a bit of a paradox though isn’t it?
How do you show you can play big in a bigtime game if you don’t get the opportunity?

Of course Brad is going to lean on his veterans. AND 75-89 % of the time is probably right to do so. Obviously he’s gonna do what he wants. We’ve already seen that movie a bunch of times now.

But you don’t think there wasn’t 45 sec to a min stint somewhere in that game that those guys could have got some tick?

Yes, I know I’m just a Hotdog Vendor in Goobervile and I haven’t coached D-I hoops. So let’s get that out of the way. Lol

We’re looking at a grueling…remaining BIGTEN schedule AND then the BIG DANCE in March. A 6 man rotation ain’t gonna cut it for either. Right now, a couple key injuries would basically render us unable to finish the season.

Actually about 15 layups that rolled around and didn't go in.
Actually about 1 (by Rodgers or Harmon) at 1:02 to play when Rodgers has his hand on a steal, but the ball slipped past him. Had that been a steal and a dunk, it would have cut MD's lead to 1 point with 1 min to play, and, in that situation, I like our odds to get a win over that final minute.

We need to support this team! Harmon had a rough shooting night, but he will fix that. I love his and Ty's defense right up until the end this game. Our team shot poorly in the 2nd half, but they never gave up. I'm proud of them and of our university too.

Was at the game. The crowd was complete crap in the first half, including Krush. I was in Krush 13-15 years ago and it’s just not close to once it once was, I thought we had them on the ropes and the crowd could have helped with somewhat of a knockout in the first half.

Look....I know the Krush isn't missing layups, not grabbing rebounds or playing swiss cheese defense on the court. But I was going to come here to post the exact same thing.

It is infuriating to me, both watching games at home and (today) in person, how quiet the Krush are most of the time. We were up 20-11 and I looked at the Krush and basically 90% of them were standing still with their arms crossed not making an ounce of noise. At that point, early in the game with a nice lead, the SFC should've been going bonkers with the Krush leading the way. Step on Maryland's throats and don't even give them a chance to get back into the game. Look at how the Paint Crew does it at Mackey....they put their foot on the gas and scream and give themselves a TRUE home court advantage the whole game.

I'd have to go look at old games on YouTube from when I was in Krush in 03-05, but I remember basically having no voice at the end of games.:cautious: Instead, the SFC crowd now gets loudest during McNuggets free throws. There were no inspired, fun, distractions from the Krush during free throws like there used to be. Some weird curtain thing that wasn't even behind the hoop that I'm sure the players can barely see.
Doesn’t help that have cut the Krush seats in half since you were there

You could give the Krush all 15,500 seats and it wouldn't matter if they just stand there with their arms crossed in silence.

It was a very bad game, yes, but wow, the hot takes on this thread are unreal. I swear, just a few of those layups drop and maybe 1 more 3 and we scratch out a win, and we would all be celebrating the grit and guts of this team. This is a very good team, even without TSJ. While this loss is disappointing, the sky is NOT falling. I expect a nice bounce back on Thursday. I sure hope our guys are not wringing their hands after today. This team has shown me this year that they are "The Fighting Illini" not the Lay Down Illini. Let's go!

Too many times one player came down and didn’t even think about including the rest of the team. Forced shots up and gave up five turnovers. And on defense, no doubling up on the opposition in the paint.Uggh. Two ugly games in a row.
... team fg 32.8% vs 46% will lose most games. MDomask was 9 of 19 and 6/6 ft....the rest of team was 12 of 45 Fg.

i saw similar on Marcus forcing at end, but no one else was making shots or getting open...without TS, Marcus is our main playmaker and Terps did a great job of stifling him at the end.

I really think the "make layups" peeps are really thinking shallowly about things and lacking context. Yeah, we missed a bunch of two point shots today. Many of which were highly contested and/or very difficult. It's not like they were blowing wide open two foot shots.

Part of the problem is the offense was completely discombobulated all day and we were just driving in and chucking up awful shots to beat the shot clock. Problems went a lot deeper than "missed layups".
I'd like to see Ty be more selective on his drives like doing so when there's a big in the paint he can either get a screen from or deliver a pocket pass to.
Granted, if Dain isn't getting minutes it may take until next year with Rez for this to happen.

The players in front of both were absent on defense and continued to be absent on defense again and again. Good coaching means holding them accountable, which means sitting them down and giving the players behind the starters a chance. No, Moretti and DGL haven't set the world on fire so far, but they haven't proven themselves unworthy of an opportunity in a situation like today when the players in front of them showed up half asleep. Instead of actually holding his starters accountable, Brad yelled and screamed, but did nothing to demonstrate that if his starters mail it in like they did today that they will pay for it in terms of minutes. It sends the wrong message to both the starters (I can show up ready or not and I'll still be able to get mine,) and the reserves (it doesn't matter how much effort I put in or if the guys ahead of me mail it in. Forget about me getting a fair opportunity.).

The MSU game was waaayyyyyyyy louder when the Krush was absent.....

IMO, this team of ours will struggle. They're missing their best player and don't have a point guard. It''s time to ease Moretti into the lineup little by little and hope he will get major minutes soon.

Just a bad game all around. Other than Goode’s start and Dain’s mini-run, just not a lot encouraging out there yesterday. A fair amount of the difficulties aren’t things that Illini normally struggle with. No need for crazy analyses or hot takes, just turn the page and move on to the next one. Unfortunately, going to have these games once in awhile when your best offensive and top two defensive player isn’t available. Let’s get right against Michigan.

This bad loss can be attributed to a combination of the following: poor interior defense...lack of offensive rebounding...at times poor shot selection...missed shots, some contested that more times than not will go in...some poor coaching decisions, prep and in game....everyone I think needs to wear this loss as we just didn't play very well at all......win as a team, lose as a team, no pointing fingers blaming the other guy....and 1 last thought.....shake hands at the end of the game and keep your mouth shut!

Moretti is not the answer, he hasn't shown ability to hit 3s or score. I do know he will not defend or rebound like Ty.

Surprised about lack of CH discussion.Thought he was out of sorts, reverting back to complaining on calls, throwing arms in air, pouting on bench, shows zero leadership.Guess this will not change.

I do not see Nico getting to the basket very often or doing much rebounding
What are his strenghts?
What is the difference he might of made in today's game????
They provide downtime for our heavily used rotation. Nico can initiate a different offense than Ty and can actually feed the post to someone like Domask or Dain instead of initiating at the 3pt line.

You are most certainly giving up defense, but going to a traditional line up with Nico and and Dain can bear fruit offensively and provide a new look. DGL is at very least going to try hard and gives us a quick guard on offense that can shoot and space the floor.

In short, it gives us options. We need to add something new in, because Booty Ball isn't working as effectively as it was.

The team needs to block out all the noise about the TSJ case. Whatever we read on the internet is the same stuff the team reads. Got to block that stuff out. ;)

Coleman seemed like the only one that had any fire in the second half. He tried to do his best to will the team to play better but nobody else responded.

This stat says it all - Illinois attempted 24 layups in the second half and only made eight of them.
Also how many times did Young drive in and put up a shot with someone draped all over him and still somehow managed to score. We couldn't put them in when we basically ended up with a wide open bunny after getting by the defense. A lot those we normally make would not go down.

I actually thought Coleman wa she only one putting up a fight. He was frustrated for sure, but that was as much at his team as it was anything else. You could tell the game mattered to him, regardless of the outcome. Those fouls were pretty bad thou by the standards set by the refs. Maryland was getting away with much more physical play and were amply rewarded for it. Frustrating indeed.
