Wish we could retire this style in general. It's not working for me, and its basically the discount version of the Syracuse unis.
I thought these would grow on me eventually but they just haven’t. It doesn’t help that we’ve sucked out loud from the moment we put them on but I’m just not a fan. Somehow too busy and too generic at the same time. The mono-blue combo needs to be launched into the sun.

I just cannot get over the vertical striping on the shoulders. I think it looks awful and incomplete, like it should go down further, but then that would've looked even worse, so they just cut it off. I'm OK with the helmet stripe, although I wouldn't have been opposed to a solid color scheme there. Regardless, would prefer after the season that Whitman and company throw these in the dumpster and set it on fire.

I liked how FAU’s version of our shoulder stripes didn’t go down as far. The Adidas template of our uniform design makes their teams look less busy than how the Nike teams with our uniform look.

Two random thoughts for this Friday morning!

1. People are really proving the theory correct that fans force themselves to like uniforms that are associated with wins/success and start to hate uniforms associated with losses! :ROFLMAO: With the home uniforms, people might have a point ... but I am genuinely not sure how someone could have preferred our road uniforms from last year over this year. They just simply looked cheap.

2. COME ON, BRET! Break out the O/W/B tomorrow!! It worked at the Big House in 1999 at around the exact same time of year when we were also struggling (3-3 coming off of a blowout loss to Minnesota at home...), and we need some good juju!

I'm all for uni variations but would rather BB steer the boys away from superstition and toward translating clear thinking into flawless action on the gridiron.

The striping causes issues with the uniforms since they seem to prefer matching sets which I get and it works but it leads to the more boring looks. Like I kind of think the last uniform set did the o/w/w better if we are going to do that all the time. This set the home uniforms pops more compared to the last one which didn’t at all but it’s hard not to feel a little disappointed with some of the issues caused by the stripes.

This. We designed traditional football uniforms and have mostly refused to use them traditionally (i.e. w/ contrasting jerseys/pants).
Just so I understand, are people saying the current set creates a "conflict" of sort between two guiding principles for our uniforms to look good?

1. Making sure the strips on the shoulders match the stripes on the pants
2. Just looking "traditional" in general (i.e., X/Y/X and Y/X/Y uniform patterns or as you said contrasting jerseys/pants)

Because I think the second one is way more important. To me, the O/W/W looks jarring because it's so much white and we are a school that actually has a second full color! Not because of any stripes. I don't think our O/W/O set looks "off" in any way whatsoever simply because the shoulder stripes are B/O/B and the pants are B/W/B. That IS consistent to me, as it simply always keeps the navy on the outside and the third color in the equation on the outside.

I think the stripes should be a way lesser concern than the actual main colors of the pants/jerseys ... JMO. Again, I get this is subjective in many ways, but there are so many schools like Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Alabama, Washington State, etc. that have ONE color and have to rely on white. It just seems a bit less "right" when we wear all of this white, IMO. If it were up to me, out of our (1) helmet, (2) jersey and (3) pants, two of those three would always be navy and orange. And since Bret has said we are riding and dying with only an orange helmet, that eliminates white pants on the road for me - rock orange or (preferably!!) navy.

I don’t have a huge problem with the mismatching stripes but I think the team thinks they look better when they match. I would prefer more o/w/o with this set tbh but I don’t think we are getting that because of that reason. That conflict is kind of more for the home uniform too where we have to go away from o/b/o to match the stripes. I guess what I’m trying to say is my problem is less so the mismatching stripes but to match the stripes which I think on average the team prefers you’re gonna get o/b/b and o/w/w.

Ah, I gotcha. Yeah, during the Maryland game I kind of came to the conclusion that our uniform would actually look kind of cool with only the helmet and pants stripes ... and a plain jersey. It would be kind of a unique take on a traditional look.

I’d like to see our traditional O/B/O uniform for Homecoming. And I want to see #3 cross the goal line multiple times.
I have sort of gone away from my "uniform convictions" after seeing the blue pants at home and thinking it looked cool, but I still agree with this. This probably would have been my preferred "default" uniform schedule for this year, keeping a super consistent look but still having a few "special" games:

vs. Toledo: O/B/O (default home)
at Kansas: O/W/B (navy pants on the road for a "big game")
vs. #7 Penn State: O/O/W ("Orange Out" uniform and our special use of the white pants)
vs. FAU: O/B/O (default home)
at Purdue: O/W/O (default road)
vs. Nebraska: O/B/B (navy pants for night games!)
at Maryland: O/W/O (default road)
vs. Wisconsin: O/B/O (default home for Homecoming)
at Minnesota: O/W/O (default road)
vs. Indiana: O/B/O (default home)
at Iowa: O/W/B (navy pants on the road for a "big game")
vs. Northwestern: O/B/O (default home)

My (apparently ever-changing...) guiding principles:
- "Special" uniforms should be, well ... special. An orange jersey should be worn once per year, not randomly - either for an "orange out" or (as I have previously wished for) as a special jersey only vs. Mizzou since it always works with their colors, home or away. Pick a combo at home and on the road and stick with them unless it is in some way a unique game.
- For example, if you stick with O/B/O at home, maybe only bust out the O/B/B for a night game since it will look cool under the lights?
- On a similar note, while I would LOVE navy pants on the road as the default, I understand that is unlikely to happen. So, stick with O/W/O as the default, and only bust out the O/W/B combo 1-2 times per year for an especially big game. If navy pants on the road are the norm, then flip it and only reserve the orange pants for the biggies. I think I am (possibly?) in the minority here, but I say retire the white pants with the white jerseys if there is no white helmet.

I understand that a lot of fans will not agree, and it appears entirely evident that the players/recruits do not ... and that is fine, because they're the ones that matter! However, I am personally just not a fan of the Beckman/Lovie routine of randomly switching jersey combos each week on a whim. "It's the small things" and all, but I kind of like how Michigan, Iowa, OSU, etc. fans only get to see a variation of their jerseys on rare occasions and it thus seems like a bigger deal. 🤷‍♂️

Did you guys catch the buffoonery the Colts adorned themselves in yesterday?

The black helmets...yeesh. I know they are gimmicky and played, but in this particular instance, isn't it a no-brainer to flip the horseshoe to white?

They also used the secondary logo on everyone's jersey, which is actually a nice mark on its own, but this is the one particular usage of it that is really silly, because it makes it look like they were designating everyone captain for the game.

Anyway, the lesson here is 1) NFL teams should tap the brakes on uniform creativity a bit....compared to CFB they miss like 90% of the time (just do more throwback riffs like the INCREDIBLE uniforms the Eagles wore last night) and 2) we are (thankfully) moving in the right aesthetic direction, because we've dropped this type of nonsense.

(If I keep predicting O/W/B every away game, I will eventually be right ... right?!)

P.S. Syracuse got smoked at FSU last weekend, but I personally thought they looked good doin' it! :ROFLMAO:

what's frustrating about our current unis is how close they are to being good.

do the shoulder stripes like syracuse (horizontally on the arm, not vertically on the shoulder pad) and wear the classic O/B/O combo at home and we are absolutely golden

As a joke I used the Big AI image creator to create "Illini grey ghost jerseys with a small amount of orange" and it did an okay job as far as AI go.
(Also it seems like AI has a good feel for Illini football jerseys lol)
