Yeah. If I remember correctly they've also thrown batteries, coins, and trash at not only opposing teams and players, but even their families watching them play. Maryland has been one of the absolute worst behaved college fanbases for a very long time, since well before they joined the B10. Whenever Duke or UNC played them there were always ugly incidents. I'm completely serious when I say that I just hope our players leave College Park safely, and I would strongly recommend TSJ's family not attend that one.

It's easy for people to say tune it out, but the Northwestern fans were a walk in the park compared to what's coming. MSU will be a very tough environment for TSJ, but Maryland... it's going to be really really ugly.
The colloquial term for a fanbase like the Terps used to be "couch-burners." They foul their own nests after big wins and big losses. And they're generally unpleasant.

And anybody could see that, which begs the question why put TJ out there for 40 minutes, including putting him on Boo when we needed one stop to win the game?

Still love Brad and I think he’s a great coach but last night wasn’t his best. It happens. We all have off days/nights. Despite the poor coaching, unconscious shooting by NW and us smoking a bunch of layups, it still went to OT.

I bet if you take the exact same shot charts and replay that game 100 times we probably win 75. Happens on the road.
The way I remember it Boo killed us when we switched. I was begging us not to switch when guarding Boo. The one time I remember Boo getting after Shannon, Shannon was looking for a screen that didn't come.

No offense, but using this statistic is a very lazy way of fitting a particular negative narrative.

Last season the team had many known flaws, and still had a chance of making noise last year. Not to mention, a vast majority of those quad 1 losses were road B1G games. It is hard to win on the road in the B1G, especially given how deep the conference was last year. This season, the team has struggled a bit in Quad 1 games, but outside of Marquette and the clunker against Maryland, these Quad 1 losses were true road games. Some of the other wins might move up to Quad 1 depending on how the season plays out. While it looks disappointing, I take that statistic with a huge grain of salt.

Do you not recall winning the B1G tourney (should have been tied with Michigan for B1G champs) and getting a 1 seed in 2021; winning B1G regular season title in 2022, and making the tourney safely three straight years (4 if you include COVID cancelled season)?

This team has won many big games the last few years, we just have not had the success we wanted in the NCAA Tourney. This season still has a ways to go, but there is reason to believe that this team can make a deep run. This narrative is very weak IMO.
we haven't won a road game against a tournament team since Kofi and Trent were on the team, its a more than fair criticism

Brad went to that 5 man switching defense ...

You start having guys do ISO stuff and not what Brad wants ... You get what we had last year ...

Brad needs to take the blame for the defense and make an adjustment going forward ...
I mean, for a lot of that game we weren’t switching on pick and rolls (and should have been IMO). Coleman was in a deep drop and Boo hit a bunch of floaters and killed us.

shoot, 99% of our out of bounds plays are post Hawkins at the free throw line and lob pass it. Sweet, we get the ball in bounds but never seem to get easy baskets.
agree lame - that leads to why doesn't Underwood use the use it or lose it timeout in the first half to set up a play.

Well , I finally nodded off @ 4 am this morning and woke up @ 8:15 am........took a much needed shower to wash away the stink from the game last night.....I don't know about anyone else , but last night's game had me lathered up from the opening tip off until the disappointing end...........................Got medded up big time , but couldn't shake the ending of regulation when Marcus' shot looked like it was going in but bounced off the rim , forcing overtime.....In the brief gap between regulation's end and before the OT tip I thought that who gets the first points would probably win out as the game had been a slugfest from the start......

I will give nu ZERO credit for winning the game....Not in my make up to credit a bunch of wussies that compliment.........

Ty Berry is the leader of the wuss-a-thon in Evanston....has been since he has been there.....I got a big kick out of him TRYING to show off his muscles at one point last night and not a hint of any muscle mass.....apparently his muscle mass is confined to his mouth and tongue.....then he runs away like a kid on a grammar school recess yard.....

I will be glad when buie leaves as he is tough , but he gets special treatment from the refs.....case closed.......I agree that the crowd chants and SIGNS they had were average at best and nowhere close to what the twerps have in store......I can guarantee that the fairyland fans started working on their plans as soon as TSJ received the TRO to play again.....

Oh well , you win some , you lose some........it's worth noting again as others have , that we missed NUMEROUS layups again , with some layups being tipped up again 3-4 times with zero points....I'm sure there had to be some fouls on some of those offensive rebound-a-thons but none called........color me not surprised....we did get some reffing breaks , no doubt.......

My thoughts now are , let's pound the sh*t out of the unlovable loosiers and regain our swagger.....we will still be a ranked team and a target for the remaining B$G games left on the schedule.........learn from this loss and move on.....it's really the only thing we can do..............it really really is ................................

this is how I felt after the game last night......it really really is....................

I still dont feel any better. we haven't won a road game against a tournament team since Kofi and Trent were on the team. impossible to have any confidence in these guys big picture. absolutely have to go 2-1 vs MSU, Wisconsin, and Purdue and not lose any other games.
quad 1 record the last 2 years says a lot.

This loss is not the same as the Maryland loss. The Maryland game was just us being bad. Our offense looked terrible, no movement against Maryland. Our offense looked fine after a slow (or going too fast) start in the first half.

We played a great game offensively, but really they rolled or bounced one in for every shot we had roll off the rim.

My first real issue with Hummel was him talking at length against the F1 foul on TJ. Yes, Berry was going after the ball, but he still smoked TJ in the face. You can't judge intent. The defender has to be in control so he doesn't more or less punch another player in the face.
In Hummel’s defense, he said, almost under his breath, by rule it was a flagrant 1 and he understood why they called it. He almost yelled he didn’t like the rule.

You clearly stated that BU cannot be trusted to win a big game by looking at Quad 1 record over last two seasons. Yes, that statistic stinks, but luckily the tourney is not played on the road. To be clear, beating a tourney team on the road is not an easy task, even for top ranked teams. In addition, over the last two years, the Illini have won three top 15 neutral court games, including one against then #2 ranked Texas at MSG. You are relying too heavily on Quad 1 record and the lack of beating a tournament team on the road over a relatively short sample size to say that Brad can't be trusted to win the big game. Even over the last two seasons, the Illini have some pretty big wins. Don't write off this team because they lost on the road to #17 Tennessee, #1 Purdue (without TSJ), and now Northwestern (yes, the MD loss at home is baffling though). I believe this team will get on a roll once TSJ gets the rust off.

Yeah, that one I don't agree with Hummel on whatsoever. If this were the NBA back in the 90s, yeah, that'd be considered a hard foul. But this is college basketball in the 2020s. It's a really bad and clear-cut flagrant foul. Even if you argue he's making a play on the ball, which quite frankly is giving that foul way more benefit of the doubt that it deserves, he missed by multiple feet and hit a guy with an otherwise open dunk directly in the head, hard. Based on what the B10 has called flagrant fouls in recent years, I think the play is on the very far side of flagrant 1 if not a flagrant 2 outright. Plays like this are what the NCAA was trying to get out of the game because of how dangerous they are.

I'd personally have called this a flagrant 2. He can say he didn't intend to hit him, but you can't wildly swing in the vicinity of a player's head like that. Clear fragrant and one of the worst flagrants I've seen in B10 play in the past few years. Should've been straight ejected.

We really have some defensive things to clean up. With that being said, we played overall good and would have beaten a bunch of good teams on the road playing like that. NW played out of their minds, give them credit. Missed too many layups as well.

Shannon clearly has some rust to work off, which is fine. Once he gets going, we really are going to get on a roll here
I wish I had your eternal optimism lol

I thought it was flagrant as well even before the replay. I don’t know about flagrant 2. It is hard to judge intent but maybe that is the major flaw with the rule - judging intent. Intent does not matter with targeting in football. Helmet to helmet is targeting. Period.

We’re talking about a game in Evanston, not Ann Arbor or Columbus. Evanston!

This is going to be a hard rest of the season for a good group of young players who were really fun to watch prior to the return of TS.

Beware what you wish for!

I don't have anywhere near the athleticism to be dunking at my age, but if someone teed off on my face like that, there would've been a combo meal on the way.
