The hall can get loud, but so many of the seats are so far away from the court and the concrete just makes it harder. When they renovated it there was a huge discussion back and forth about renovation versus building new. I for sure was in the camp of build a new arena. The seating and sight lines are just so much better at MSU, Wisconsin ect. So many more seats closer to the floor.

Don‘t get me wrong I love the Assembly Hall for what it is. I saw my first game there in 1967, so it clearly has meaning to me. For $185 million (I believe that was the renovation cost?). You could have had an amazing new arena.

Friends of mine (Kansas fans) went to the scrimmage game earlier this year. They said they couldn’t believe how quiet it was in State Farm Center. They expected it to be a loud since Illinois was beating the preseason #1 team. They have been to many different arena and were underwhelmed by the crowd at Illinois!

Maybe it was because it was a scrimmage…🤷‍♂️
Maybe also because the tickets started originally at $80.. It was simply a fundraiser and yes it was a dead crowd... Most of our fans are just not crazy stand and yell type of fans.. they like to sit on their hands. I think it is funny when I get mad and scream bull!!!! at how many people stare at me like I am crazy

Well lord knows I can not spell
Give yourself a break my friend! You spelled dossal correctly!!!!

Dossal

A Dossal, from French dos, is one of a number of terms for something rising from the back of a church altar.

In the grand scheme of things, being so fanatic about a sporting event that you scream and yell doesn't make much logical sense.

I do wish the students, who aren't known for being logical at that stage in life, would be a little more ridiculous.

People keep saying this, but it WAS one of the loudest circa 2005. It simply was. Hate to say it, but go watch a video on YouTube of a home game from 2000-2007 … the current problem is us. And we have video evidence, haha.

2023-24 vs. #4 Marquette

2006-07 vs. #3 Wisconsin

Needless to say, the current squad has done way more to deserve a great crowd. In the 2007 video, there is a hum of crowd noise the whole time - just as there is in Mackey. In the Marquette video, our crowd waits to react.

Start the 2007 video at 1:57:42. At 1:58:12, McBride hits a three for the lead … JUST as loud as anything we heard at Mackey the last few years. We can do better, and we have in the past!
Thanks for that memory. Man, I wish Frazier wasn’t forced into that three at the end. Missed opportunities, but really had a chance at the end. lol, feels just like yesterday.

Your point is very true. Even in 2011, the noise was very good. I remember when we played number one Ohio state and made a real game of it. The crowd was loud and proud. Haven’t seen that kind of initiating buzz in the crowd much since. We’ve been loud but as you said, the fans wait to react.

Really interesting Armchair Illini article on the home page in regards to UConn having a similar issue last year as we do with Ty (5 guarding and sagging off) and how they countered it. Will be interesting to see if we see something similar when we are put in that situation again.

Can I also add to the noise conversation that I went to the Purdue/Illini game, and the announcer/PA/music/scoreboard/screen/etc make a HUGE difference as well. I feel like Purdue's crew that was in charge of pumping up the crowd does a better job cueing the crowd than the State Farm Center Crew. Just my opinion!

It seems like our Illini have really taken pride in dominating the boards this year.

Since Purdue just demolished us on the glass, I think we come out with a vengeance in this one. My biggest worry is Hoggard is probably going to be tough for Domask to back down. Will we be able to generate enough offense without Domask getting 20+ pts? Hopefully!

Domask and Rogers need to drive and pass, a littlle too much dribbling
To often when the guards penetrated others were just standing around
Difficult to be to critical when Domak is hitting almost 50% from the field and 90% from the line.

I'm not so sure how much better MSU has been playing. They had a huge win (at home) against Baylor. Their games since then (all at home) were against Oakland, Stony Brook, Indiana State, and Penn State - not exactly a tough stretch. They've had 3 road games (Duke, Zone, Nebraska,) and lost all 3, although 2 of 3 are legit top teams. If they torch Northwestern tonight, I might change my mind a bit. But, NWU is not the Illini. I will be very surprised if this Illini team were to lose this game.

Students? Logical? You understand those two words are antonyms?

Domask has the green light to play booty ball and has been extremely effective. The shooters are all ready for a kick out at the arc when he gets doubled. That is pretty much what the offense is designed to do when that scenario is in play. It is most effective when there is no rush, and MD has been very, very efficient...and his shooters have also been efficient. The biggest drawback is offensive rebounding. It is pretty much a one shot possession. It is not "pretty", but proven difficult to stop, especially in the right match-ups.

TBF, if the numbers are accurate online, Edey's 7'4", 300 lbs. A slightly taller Kofi. Coleman is 6'10", 225. CoHawk gives up 75 lbs and half a foot to the guy and still did a solid job on him.

I commented here last spring that I'd love to see CoHawk put on at least 25 lbs in the weight room in the off-season, which would have been a cinch. I got slagged for it. If he were stronger he wouldn't give up mobility and he'd have a greater presence against bigs underneath (force against an external resistance.) Too late at this point. I'm amazed that he's able to do what he does defensively against bulky fives. It's seriously impressive, and not recognized as much as it should be.
From just the height standpoint, the NBA Draft Combine measured barefoot Coleman at 6’8.5” - which marginally bolsters your summation…

I believe Edey’s actual height is around 9’7” 🙂

Agree that was rebounding that cost us the game. Guess I do think it is a personnel problem however. Hawk and even Dain looked like boys compared to Edey. He can reach over them and is immovable to block out. Don’t know what his reach is but he is very different from Dickinson.
I don’t think there’s anyone in the same area code as Edey physically this year. Guy has something like four inches on Kofi, so how do you plan your roster around stopping him?

The guy who killed us imo was Kaufmann-Renn. We had a chance to dig our way out of that hole with Edey on the bench but they still ran up the score on the boards.

Anyway, we’ve been good on the boards this year but not as good as the raw totals (total rebounds, rebound margin, etc.) would indicate and I’d love to see us get a bit better there. I would not be surprised to learn that we’ve had more missed field goals against than any team in the country this year. We don’t turn other teams over at all, we don’t foul, and we have almost the top defensive FG% in the country. If you just count boards we’re gonna look really good just because of all that. But at the moment we’re 77th in the country in defensive rebounding percentage. I think we fell something like 30-40 spots on the leaderboard on Friday alone, but we still haven’t been quite as good as we could be there all things considered.

It’s room to grow, which is great considering how good our D already is. Don’t foul, take care of the glass, and folks will not score on this team.

Any example of a player having a career game against us....he is a decent player for sure , but have that game ??.....unexpected I would assume what the Illini thought would happen......JMHO
