Purdue 31, Illinois 24 Postgame

Yeah, I have to pile on here: If you're bailing on this team, with this staff and the record this season, then Illinois football-fandom is not for you. In fact, sportsball fandom in general is likely not for you.

For those of us who survived Tepper-ball, Zook's little notepad, Beckman's chawing/tripping down the sideline ... we're encouraged, most of us. Yeah, I really wanted to beat the MSU fightin' thugs and the annoying boilerbreakers, but we're just not quite good enough yet. But we do have a winning record, we're going to a bowl game, and our coaching staff are a group we can be proud of.

Go Illini.

I have been a 8 year season ticket holder. I was thinking of not renewing my seats after this year. This was a "prove-it" year for me. After this last week I will not renew. The Idea of giving Lunney an extension after the vanilla unimaginative play calling is to hard to watch. I will always be a fan but spending my money and the 2hour drive will no longer happen.
So what did you expect when you bought this year's tickets? Most had had Illinois at with no more than 4 to 6 wins.

I had Purdue band parents sitting behind me, and they were bragging on their "Best Band in the Land" before the game. I had some choice words for them in the 2nd quarter when the PU band started playing while the MI were doing their "requested" song. Classless and unnecessary, and that band should never be invited back to MS.

Purdue fans are now competing with Iowa fans for "most annoying".
The World's Largest Drum being objectively and obviously smaller than Big Bertha from Texas is one of my favorite running gags.

I just have to say that it sucked sitting in the horseshoe and having to endure the Purdue band the entire game... that was all we could hear
They would wait until the Marching Illini began to play and then jump all over them.

Two examples of the rudeness of Purdue’s band: When the winning song of ghe text voting was announced and the song begun, that bush league band from West Lafayette began playing something loudly.

After the game, when their team was back in the locker room and most most of the fans were gone, the Marching Illini began playing our Alma Mater, the Purdue Bush League Band came in at fortissimo playing what I presume was their fight song. That was the last time, on senior day, that the Marching Illini would play the Alma Mater in uniform at Memorial Stadium. For the seniors, it would be the last time ever.

These are unacceptable, especially after the Marching Illini extended the invitation to Purdue to play at the game and perform at halftime. It’s unforgivable. I trust that Barry Houser and his successors never invite Purdue to the stadium again for 50 years. And if the Marching Illini are invited to West Lafayette, I hope we decline.

Again I have had season tickets for 8 years(34-57). I had no expectations of a Big West Championship(there is still a chance). I am happy to see us go to a bowl game. I am always going to be an Illini fan it's in my blood for 50 years. My point was I am sooo frustrated with the idea of extending an offensive coordinator that we have won games in spite of. JMHO. That my season ticket $ will be spent on other things.

this classlessness is completely on the PU band director and would have no problem sending some MSU players after him

My dad had season tickets for 37 years, and I'm going on 15 years. While winning is nice, we obviously didn't go because we had a winning program. We go to cheer on the student athletes, root for the band, and see the other season ticket holders that sit near me. We are like family, even though we only see each other for the home games, and then wait a year to do it all over again. My grandkids root for the Illini because their PaPi does. That is worth getting tickets every year.

Well said... if any regulars around us miss a game we notice! We are a FamILLy!!

I also love that Purdue tried to claim the dimensions of the drum were a "trade secret." They obviously knew it was smaller than Bertha and even Miznoz's drum.

We are obviously watching different games then. Illinois is not winning in spite of our OC. As mentioned in other threads, these sorts of extensions are normal and are for continuity purposes. I am amazed you made it through the Beckman and Lovie era, if this is the reason you are done.

Despite the vanilla offensive play calling, look at how good DeVito has looked. I feel this is due to the scheme and coaching. Given development and recruiting, I look forward to seeing the offense down the road. We are simply lacking a deep play threat right now. This is not the fault of the OC. In fact, he is trying to draw up plays to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers. The issue in almost every loss is unforced errors, in the form of penalties. We simply are not a team able to play from behind the sticks. You can blame penalties on coaching, but a lot have been holding calls. I think that is where recruiting and development will resolve that issue. The team is just not deep enough yet, and you can see the line wearing down, which is where many penalties are coming from.

I also drive two hours each way and can’t make every game, but sometimes others can use your tickets as well. I’ve been going to the games mostly with season tickets since 1982.

One of the worst arguments in sports. Things change and expectations are adjusted to reflect those changes.
yeah, less an argument as much of a thought experiment in response to the postgame catastrophizing.

i agree its been a disappointing few weeks but to those who will never watch again, worst ever, etc etc, i dont know what program you've been following the past decade. even with the disappointment, the arrow is clearly pointing up

literally everyone picked us dead last (or close to it) it the west; even here in koolaid land we were pushing the limit predicting a 6 win/bowl eligible season and even with these 2 losses we still have legitimate pathways to the Big 10 championship game.

so yeah, i'm as bummed as the next person but am still convinced we're be ahead of schedule in this rebuild process.

We’re likely to buy season tickets for the first time next year, despite a 90 minute drive. When we can’t make it, we’ll give them to friends and family. However, the price must be reasonable relative to our 2-3 single game habit. It’s not yet a premium quality product, commending premium prices. They can help fill the house with a bigger season ticket base by keeping prices in check.

I've had season tickets since the 2005 season, and for the last 15 years I've driven from St. Louis every game (yes, even the Thursday night one). You can get a good enough deal if you don't mind the horseshoe. Our family has 4 people (7 if you count family from the Illinois side that comes with us), and it's about $100 per person for the whole season.

Horseshoe would be an issue for us. We’re accustomed to views like this from East Baloney last Saturday. My depth perception is sketchy anyway and this perspective let’s me follow movement easily. Guess I’m spoiled.

207 (near the 20) has never been more than $129/ year in the decade I have had them. Come over there so I am less surrounded by Purdue fans in two years!

We were in 206 for one game this year, but typically lean toward the north end, as we enjoy the band. We’ll see what’s available at different prices. Your $129 is reasonable.

Saturday we migrated around the horseshoe at halftime and popped out in the west balcony to avoid the wind. Very nice over there.

It's a prove it year and they can go 8-4 and have a better season than anyone anticipated. That is proving it.

Yes, I don't think there is any question we have beaten all expectations this season. Most predictions had us winning maybe 4 games and coming in last in the West. Why people aren't ecstatic over winning 7 or 8 games is beyond me.

I just hate the second half record. It's great to have that feeling of momentum going into the off-season
