Purdue 83, Illinois 78 Postgame

Domask needs the six days of rest coming up before MSU. I'm feeling good after almost a week off between games. Underwood has had the guys ready after long breaks so far. Hopefully QG's wrist is ok. We need some depth minutes since Dain is basically unplayable on defense.

Ty needs to be more willing to just shoot the ball, otherwise he will continue to be a liability on offense. I think we looked sped up at times, but overall we looked good. Moral victories are fine when they are coupled with tangible, real victories.

That's exactly what it is.. Just because you are boxing out does not give you the right to keep forcing contact backing up and up and up. The player has the right to go for the ball and in this case the guy boxing out did not even attempt to go for the ball and created a dangerous situation by simply backing up with no regards for what the player behind him was doing.

He just stayed low and kept backing up undercutting QG. QC goes straight up for the ball to get the rebound and the defender doesn't even try to make a play on the ball.
This- I don’t know why the board is so unanimous it was such a bad call- likely because Hummel was so adamant it was calling the game live- but you can’t undercut a guy in the air at any level of basketball. Nothing wrong with his box out but when you back into him while he’s in the air and undercut him that is a dangerous play- Jones didn’t hold his position, he took QC’s legs out from under him

Really proud of this team. Last year's team would have dissolved into weeping after that first half. A few thoughts:
1) our FT shooting was fantastic and kept us in the game. Bodes well moving forward

2) we seemed rattled playing in a hostile environment and looked really loose with the ball for much of the game.

3) I actually like this as a close loss. Not claiming moral victory, but there is a ton too build on from this game and Brad et al are the staff to do it. hopefully this experience will bear fruit in March

4) agree with thoughts on Ty. Yes, would love for him to shoot 40% from 3 but I think he already has enough in the bag to play that match up (Edey) differently next time. He is skilled, no reasonable to treat the rock like a hot potato

5) I L L

A lineup of Marcus, TJ, Luke, Quincy and Coleman win that game
Ty not being a shooter was such a huge part of the beginning of the game. No 2nd chance points or lane since Edey could just sit under the rim.

In every other game this lineup would've been the counter-punch.

Also, (just watching BU post game interview), I'm so thankful we have a coach who keeps it classy.
He's not afraid to be complimentary of the other teams players, yet still cause it like he sees it.

Not sure how fans tolerate head coaches whose post game interviews turn into tirades, or who mispronounce the last name of the nation's best players in their interviews

Man, I don't know. Jones has a box out in place. It would be stupid dangerous, but what else is stopping players from just jumping in this situation and getting a foul everytime? Or is that just an indication of an "out of control" box out?
So the refs spent all that time at the table and still got it wrong?

Marcus is clearly our most important offensive player with our current roster. They need to lighten his load by having someone else bring the ball up the floor. Can’t have him gassed at the end of a tight game.
Who do you suggest?

I do like that Brad employed a screener to come between half court and the opposite 3 point line. I don't see much reason to make our non-true PG guys consistently beat smaller guards all the way up the floor every time.

If he jumps in his cylinder, you can't just slide underneath him. It's tough because he's boxing out like you're taught, but you do need to give a guy a landing spot. Unfortunate for Purdue.

True! With that in mind, did he foul that guy he landed on shooting the three? I had no sound and am not sure what he thought happened on that play
Imo Definitely fouled the 3 point shooter

Cool, collected take: Tyler Hansbrough is a clown in an analyst role. He offers no evidence that he knows how to prepare for commentary or even watch basketball. I would say he's a troll, except he clearly doesn't care beyond rolling out of bed to get his name attached to a mediocre stream.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my thoughts on him. His "analysis" of games last year included some of the most brainless, ill-prepared, and unknowledgable takes that I've heard out of a talking head. Every word he'd utter was a wasted second of everyone's time. I'm shocked they brought him back this year, as Hansbrough is awful. Hell, he makes Goodman look like he belongs in the broadcasting hall of fame...

Early on I liked Field of 68. It was mostly Dauster, Hummel, and Goodman. Between the 3 of them, it was pretty good. But as they have expanded they really haven't chosen well. Most of the guys they have are pretty, well, dimwitted.

I agree, and Ty could beat that game plan by just making 1 or 2 mid range jumpers or drive and kick.
or set on the ball picks...I mean he was totally by himself when Edey was guarding him so it would have either given our players an open 3 point shot or forced Edey to guard someone...

He is MISERABLE. I’ve seen two Field of 68 segments with him on the panel and he’s used the word “sporadic” (very incorrectly) no fewer than 5 times. Just a dim bulb.

I am certain many will not agree with my perspective because it’s easy to dislike anyone that opposes our Beloved.
With that said, I sure like MP. Yes, he has had shortcomings in the dance, but overall he’s been one heck of a coach. I
I really like his demeanor and the way he presents himself. Obviously he has a terrific basketball mind. Aside from his lack of success in March, he’s one heck of a coach and seems like a pretty cool guy and very likable and sincere. Good sense of humor as well.
None of this throws shade on BU….love that he’s leading our program…..just a shout out to someone that seems to be a terrific coach and person.

I was confused by it being a flagrant too but I was most confused as to why they didn't call it a common foul in real time. Jones definitely drove back under QG when QG was in the air but I don't think he had a clue QG jumped. I almost feel as if their rationale was that it was such a dangerous play (intent aside) that they had to call it and the only way they could use to monitor to make the call was to call it a flagrant.
I think they did, the announcers screwed it up. When you watch the replay, the baseline official was moving away from the baseline. It looked like he was making a foul call.

I forget who on Illinois got called for blocking out Edey when the Illinois player just tried to put his butt to Edey. Edey reaches over and snags the rebound over our guy. Good play by Edey. Our guy applied too much backwards contact which wasn’t even 1/4 what Jones did to our guy who was very very precariously in the air. The two fouls were night and day different. One was minor and one was egregious. I remember being upset that Edey gets to reach over our guy like that. Turnabout is fair play here.
Luke is who you are referring to in your first sentence. Someone posted a video earlier in the thread .
