I read he has a 5 year deal. How much money is He going to make? I expect it will be a pay raise

I respect Coach Walters and appreciate all he’s done for us. That being said I do not wish Purdue success. I do not wish success to any rival school. Our desire to see the Illini rise and our rivals falter does not change just because we like the rival coach.

I feel like Bret is going to benefit (in terms of fan patience) from the success Underwood has had with coaching turnover.

He already has to an extent moving on from Peterson as quickly as he did and bringing in Lunney (which is a mixed bag but I believe is an upgrade).

Point being... I feel calm, the rest of ya'll feel calm?

He's our competition now. I bet BB feels the same way.

Sad to see him go, but best of luck to Coach Walters! I'll be rooting for him when he's not playing the Illini.

PU will be an interesting rebuild next year. I was thinking before this hire they are losing a lot of talent and would be towards the bottom of the West pending transfers. They lose on defense about 7 seniors and losing starting QB and star wr

If I look at Lunney's offense we had a new OC running a new offense with a new xfer QB and mostly unknowns at WR. We had a solid O-line that maybe lacked a little in the depth department. We had solid strength and conditioning so injuries worked out better than I'd honestly hoped. And we had an amazing set of backs. All things considered, I feel like Illinois performed quite well offensively. That said, I expect improvements next season and we will probably be saying a lot of the same about the line, the receivers, the QB and backs. Our secondary... what's that going to look like?

Ryan Walters was ready for this move. I'd imagine after being with Bielema for 2 years he has his list of 3 deep potential coaches ready to go. I don't visit the Purdue board, but it would be interesting to hear the list of candidates being talked about.

good for him. always happy to see fellow illini succeeding (alums or otherwise). Wish he would stay here, but totally understand.

I wonder if he's glad now that he got passed over for the CU gig. Doesn't get to coach at his alma mater, but probably more $ and more familiar recruiting grounds.

Darrell Hazell 2.0 ( read this post on a Purdue board)
That's ridiculous. Anyone who's heard the two men speak would know they are totally different personalities. Hazell was a bit like a young Lovie Smith. Nice guy, calm, low energy.

Gave so pretty good praise to Illinois in his presser today and thanked them for the opportunity
I would expect nothing less. he's a top notch guy that BB was excited to get from Missouri
and no one involved in the program expected him to stick around more that 2-3 years. Who knows,
maybe he's our HC someday..

So he did this, which is very cool.

dude ran for 100+ yds + a TD against the #1 ranked defense in country. Scholarship sounds about right to me.

Very cool of him to do it. You can really tell how he can relate to his players just from that short snippet. even as simple as "so this is how it feels like to flex as a head coach" is endearing.

A few snipits from Purdue AD Bobinski:
- He called Walters a defensive savant
- Indicated RW has the highest ceiling of any of the 12 candidates they considered for the HC position
- Said that he has a contact at Illinois (JW or BB?) who provided nothing but superlatives about RW's capabilities as a leader

Oh -- and Joey Wagner was there and asked Ryan what he thought about Beilema preparing him (for this opportunity) over the last two years! RW honed-in on BB's role as The Football Program CEO and thanked him for the 2-year mentorship.

Some perspective about Purdue...

I recall they were mad when we hired Weber. Their message board had figured he would be the one to replace Keady. He was their head coach in waiting....

In the end, they were glad they did not take Weber. Things have a way of working out in the end. I hope RW does well (except when playing us).
