CHICAGO — All the greats who have come and gone and gone to Cooperstown as Cardinals and all the champions who have flocked in St. Louis in the past eight decades never experienced a moment like this.
Stan Musial did more things than any Cardinals ever has done or will ever do, and he never played on a team that did this. Four of the men to manage the Cardinals in the past three generations are in the Hall of Fame, and they never piloted a team lit like this that dispatched opponents with such regularity, such certainty. The Swifties did not. The El Birdos did not. Whiteyball had one of the best runs of baseball — and didn’t go through a streak like this.

With a decisive, dominant doubleheader sweep of their archrivals, these 2021 Cardinals won their 14th consecutive game to match the club record, set in 1935.

The Cardinals got jailbreak pitching from J. A. Happ and three home runs in Game 1 to weather a late charge from the Cubs and win, 8-5, on Friday at Wrigley Field. There was no such drama in the marquee game. The Cardinals slugged five home runs, two from rookie Lars Nootbaar, in Game 2. They trounced the Cubs, 12-4, on the way to matching a feat last done during the Great Depression, the same year the Richter scale was invented. The National League can feel a tremble.

Two weeks removed being four games out of the playoffs, an afterthought, not after any record but a winning one, the Cardinals (85-69) tightened their grip on a wild-card berth.

Since we have 2019, I can't say "too soon" on this one (like I still do with Ausin Peay), but I was at that game, and as a Nationals fan #1, Cardinals #2, though, I have to still say ouch. You all earned it, but just ouch if you are a Nats fan there with your son at his first playoff game. Drew Storen...oof.

Anyway, it is 2021 - go Cards - good luck keeping up this incredible run!

Can anyone who understands the rules explain what the deal was on the popout in the 9th?
Infield pop up fly rule
batter automatically out, runners advance at their own risk
nowhere in the rules calls for an umpire to call timeout
2nd base umpire called the runner out at second before he called timeout

The ump's screwed the pooch by allowing the game to continue
then to get a second screw job in , they allowed the runners to advance to second and third
i have never witnessed such gross misapplication of the rules in my memory

luckily it didnt cost us the game

Lip readers had a field day with Shildt's tirade.....good for him.....umps were wrong on multiple accounts

I just watched the replay. The umpire at second initially called the runner out on a force out. This was not correct. My guess is he immediately realized his mistake and called timeout. Thus the resulting confusion.

I still don't understand how/why the runners were allowed to advance?
The pop fly was not caught. The batter was out due to the infield fly. Since the ball was not caught the runners were allowed to advance at their own peril. The ball was picked up and thrown to 3rd. No tag was applied. The runner at third is safe, because there is no force-out. As I mentioned in the previous post, the ball was then thrown to second. The umpire gave the out signal due to force-out. This was not correct. I am speculating that the umpire immediately recognized his mistake and called time-out. Not a good look for the crew of umpires.

On the post game show it was stated that the second base ump admitted to Shildt that he messed up the call at second and then the timeout call, but there was nothing to do to reverse the mess ups.....I didn't watch the post game presser of Shildt's and just a few of Al and Erica........Al is still having trouble making coherent sentence's.....hard to watch him anymore................

So the rule states, "If the ball is near the baselines, the umpire shall declare 'Infield Fly, if Fair'". I have watched the replay and cannot determine if the umpire actually verbally calls this. If he did, then DeJong should have heard it and should have tagged the runner anyways. But as all infielders have their backs to the umpire who makes the call, The raised right hand. I can't find the gesture in the rulebook though. If he only made the hand gesture then this is even more screwed up.

Makes more sense why he's on the pregame show nowadays than doing in-game commentary. Though I'd prefer if they'd pick one person and stick with that person. I'm guessing it won't be Horton as it looks like he's gonna replace Shannon on the radio and him and Rooney have pretty good back-and-forth when they call games.
