In the litany of failures by the U of I in recent years and weeks, has anyone mentioned that the massive branding spend of the ":shield:" logo has largely been a failure?

I am referring to it as a failure as it is not distinguishable on football or basketball uniforms, on either the field or the court, and the ":shield:" is not used as a logo next to our name on football or basketball telecasts.

Couldn't disagree more. The shield is now our IP and we can use it, hopefully with increasing frequency, for years and years and years.

The rebrand is one of the best things Mike Thomas did. Especially in football, I can't tell you how many random people have told me how much they like our football uniforms.

A) I doubt it was ever meant to be a primary logo

B) Almost positive it is used when ESPN flashes the secondary logos in their lead ins and when we score in football

The only place the :shield:appears is at the top of the collar. The helmet features a block I or the outline of the state of Illinois. Hardly a uniform centered on the :shield:

What is the intent? Isn't branding supposed to give people the ability to think about a product just by looking at a logo? I doubt anyone outside of Illinois could pick this shield out of a lineup

The Block I is the primary logo. The Victory Shield is a secondary logo. You're still seeing the Block I on telecasts because....it's the primary logo.

It's all part of the same brand identity, the same process. It's all part and parcel of the same effort on Nike and Thomas' part.

It is my hope that the shield becomes the primary logo and ends up on the helmets and the midfield logos and everywhere else. But even failing that, it has added a much needed change up to what was a disastrously bad iconography profile.

O, to return to the days when our biggest concerns were fighting the good fight for #TeamShield and solving the mystery of the lamp.

Simpler times. Better times.

I want to argue about the color orange again

Not sure if this was mentioned much, but I loved our O/B/B color scheme in the Northwestern game. That's a great uniform.

I agree, except I would prefer to have a more traditional glossy orange helmet (in the correct color of course). I don't like the metallic (or whatever it is) orange on our current helmets that so many teams with orange in their color scheme have nationwide (Oregon, Syracuse, Va Tech, etc).

But I like the blue jerseys w/ blue pants a lot .

I have liked every combination.

I was at the Iowa game in Iowa City and several Iowa fans said the uniforms were very sharp.

Sorry about that image size. Can't figure out how to shrink it.. :noidea:

I was very disappointed because their anchor helmets are easily one of my favorite in all of college football.

I didn't do much research into the helmets. Being hand painted and all that I'm not sure it's something that will carry through to next year. Might have been a one off thing just for this game.

The new uni's aren't that bad (except the drab faddish gray ones).

I would love to see us scrap the (also faddish) metallic orange helmets though and go back to our more traditional orange paint scheme helmets (with the new orange color tone of course).
