Why is everyone freaking out? Its like a NFL head coaching search, they deny everything. When the Eagles hired Doug Pederson as their HC the owner of the Eagles said "Doug was the only candidate we made an offer to", that was with Adam Gase as a candidate for the job.I have to think Tiley is still in play, if he was asked what motive would there be to say "Oh yeah Im talking to Illinois pretty seriously now". He doesnt want to lose his job with Tennis Australia.

At least someone still has hope. We're freaking out bc this is playing out exactly like every other situation has been bungled since 2003. I hope I'm wrong on this - but I think we're announcing Tom Michael within a weeks time. No insider info but he may be the last option standing after our admins blew everything else.

I'm sure there's a lot of truth to that, but sometimes freaking out (or at least doing so half seriously) just relieves a bit of stress.

I just hope this all turns out well because we Illini fans have been snakebit more than a few times in the last few years.

Here's a challenge. If you were to go back in time to November 9, the day Mike Thomas was fired, and your memory of everything that's happened for the past three months were erased, and you were then asked to describe a totally plausible but also most disheartening, discouraging, disappointing, buzzkillingest, time-wastingest, darkest, bleakest outcome that you could imagine, would you be able to come up with a worse scenario than what's actually happened? I'm talking about the whole rigmarole, from the Cubit two-year contract debacle right up to Tom Michael's hitting announcement, which I'm assuming now is no more than two or three days away at this point. Because if you can, I'm honestly very interested to hear it.

If they don't have Tiley or George they should leak that. All Shannon Ryan would need to do is Tweet "hearing from good sources that Tiley and George are not involved" and we'd be done with this.

Agreed. Who said that?

To what benefit? I've heard those exacts rumors several times already anyway. Do I believe them? Hard to say since I've also heard others that directly contradict that information.

"we'd be done with this" :D

Well, now we have the leak to Shannon Ryan I spoke of. The benefit is setting expectations with the fans, so we're not surprised when we end up with Michael or Whitman.

I'm semi-enthusiastic about Whitman - he's definitely an exceptional guy with a high ceiling. Maybe we'll get to see if he can be an exceptional AD.

I'm all for that if we hire Jim Harbaugh in the meantime.
Exactly. Which happened because Jim Hackett was authorized to carry out athletic director duties during his interim tenure. In fact he was a highly respected business executive who came out of retirement to help out his alma mater and never had designs on the permanent job. He also fired an unpopular coach and pretty much cleaned up the mess left by his predecessor before handing off the job to UConn's Warde Manuel, who was Michigan's top choice for AD all along. If anything, the 15 months was a case study in how to do everything right when you're dealing with a tricky interim AD situation and locate a long-term replacement. So short answer, I think our situation has been handled a tad bit worse.

The only reason I jumped in this is that I haven`t read anything that says Illinois has dropped the ball on the hire. Only rumors. In fact it has been very quiet. I started reading these boards in 2007. And there hasn`t been one minute in those 10 years when the boards didn`t want someone fired. From Zook to Thomas, now Groce and Cubit. Hopefully, this AD hire will quell the fire talk and can turn this program around. We need someone to say yes to Illinois, who really wants to come here. :shield:

Her source is not on the search committee nor too reliable.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect it to be - it would be via someone who's connected (or thinks they are).

She's been a pretty reliable source of information over the last year hasn't she?

Goodness, if the Khan/George thing is true, and the UI screws it up, there's gonna be some mighty angry folks around here....

Um, and maybe none of us really know what we're talking about. How about a little patience and some trust in some people who really do care about these things.

Maybe so, but the thing those folks should actually be upset about is that once the pie-in-the-sky pipe dreams predictably fell through, the fallback was a career second banana that never worked a day for anyone other than a widely disliked prior administration whose only significant professional accomplishments to date have been overseeing an arena renovation and 1.5 unremarkable years at a lower division school where he's made no major coach hires. There was a middle ground between George/Tiley and Tom Micheal that the administration simply bypassed in their insistence that the hire be an "Illini guy."

We go shopping for new Porsches and when realize we can't afford the payments, walk across the street to the pre-owned Hyundai lot. Personally, I'm less depressed by broken dreams of a 911 Turbo than I am by the beige Elantra with the pine tree air freshener and missing wheel cover that's going to end up sitting in our driveway.

Do you think the people who take the time to read and post on here don't care about these things? I would argue the exact opposite.

Tiley would/could come if all angles are water tight. He cannot go back to his current job if they agree, then disagree. Outside the US the cultures are different enough to make his job very difficult to execute if his attempt to get another job was considered a "failure" to get.

I would expect Tiley to have a rep here that would act on his behalf and nail down everything before Tiley accepted. He would not put his neck out.
