Agreed. But that is irrelevant to the assertion that the firing was announced today because there is a hiring coming soon.

How so ? Just because Monty news came out today doesn't mean he was the Lovie quick hire guy... granted it seems obvious he's the easiest due to not currently being a head coach.

You did say "ask me when he gets fired" so...who do you think are our best bets?

It's very early. Despite what others think, I still think Archie is a strong possibility. Greg Marshall is gaining steam. Cuonzo possibly the fallback. Just have to trust Whitman. I don't see how this will end badly if Whitman is working with $4-5 million per year.

I never said he was. I asked who else could it be who is not preoccupied by preparations for the NCAA. Miller, Keatts, Marshall, Bennet - the entire wish list has big games next week. I doubt they are listening to offers this week.

I would be ok with Keatts as our next HC, but I don't think he deserves the same amount of money as it sounds like we are/were willing to offer Monty or a great college coach. Just doesn't have quite enough high level experience to me. If that's who we go with, save some of the money to extend him if the first 2-3 years go well.

He wouldn't get Monty $, but he'd get paid

Dayton has been sliding, plus Miller wants a P5 school to coach - I believe preferably in the B1G....I think he/family is too smart to take NC State...that will always be a tough gig. Valvano took that school has high as it will ever go imo.

Keatts is on upswing, hot name, ties to the tobacco area...if anyone had tangibles to create something at NC State to rival the blue bloods, seems he would take this in a heartbeat....makes more sense.

Martin seems like most likely for Mizzou, but could see Crean there even with the denials of interest..

My guess on way things work out...

Miller-Illinois
Keatts-NC State
Martin-Mizzou
Crean-Cal
Marshall-Indiana
Kelsey-Wichita St

I would be happy with this. Very sound reasoning. Okay, maybe not Marshall to IU, but Miller would take the sting off that for me.

The idea that Keatts is a John Groce hire is just wrong. John Groce took a mediocre Ohio program and kept it mediocre capping it off with a "fluke" hot run to the sweet 16. Keatts took a nothing program and turned it into a great one. Not okay...great. Keatts record is sterling. And barring a Lovie-esque hire (which was Monty), we would be lucky to get someone the caliber and buzz of Keatts.

In fact, we should start getting used to the idea...

This guy.

Re

I like the idea of Gregg Marshall and bringing in Jerrance Howard with him and keep Jamal Walker. No way that Marshall would come in without his assistants, but maybe one of his assistants gets to keep the Head coach job at Wichita and keeps another assistant as his associate head coach.

With that being said, there are so many left field options that could run parallel with the Lovie hire that I don't want to really venture a guess. With the Bulls alone, there's Skiles, Del Negro, and Hoiberg. Not that I think any of them are remotely likely, but I definitely didn't think Lovie was.

Also - do Keatts or Archie have any Chicago or Illinois connections or recruiting history? Thanks

Dayton starts Kendall Pollard (Simeon) and Kyle Davis (Morgan Park). Josh Cunningham (Morgan Park) has started and plays meaningful minutes -- or he did last I paid attention. So Archie has done as good in Chicago as any other team not named Duke.

Top Five (according to sources in Chicago). Probability based on availability, price, willingness to leave current program, and affinity for the Illinois job compared to other options.

1. Kevin Keatts
2. Archie Miller
3. Tony Bennett
4. Donnie Tindall
5. Gregg Marshall

Archie Miller... clap, clap, ClapClapClap!

If that doesn't pan out, let's go Krystkowiak!

And if that doesn't happen, either of Musselman or Keatts!

(I am flexible) :)

Since a search committee is being retained (hired). IIMO the hiring is not as close as some here would have us believe.

Where is this from? I sure hope not. A proven bad way to go. It costs a lot of money to get candidates pushed at you for reasons other than your schools best interests. Also would mean a longer timeline. 1 man committee only
