Ty Rodgers on the USA U18 National Team

If I didn't know what I was watching, I'd never believe anyone telling me these are the best HS players. Thus far Whitmore and Rogers have been very good. Many of the others have been underwhelming. Ware (11) is loading the stat sheet on awful play. Terrible defensive play. Poor shots. It only works because of his size advantage. Ty's passing is excellent. Several of the turnovers were the recipient failing to catch a nicely placed ball. The two Ecuador guards appear to be 5'6. They may be the best players on their team.

Ty is the star of this first half. Making the biggest difference in this game besides Ware, and with Ware it's mostly due to his vertical ability.
Ty's +/- has to be by far the highest on the team. And unlike most of the USA team, his game is so much more than athleticism--the leadership, vision, passing, spacing, defensive pressure and spacing, rebounds... Ty could have more points if he wanted to put up more shots--he's been great moving the ball to facilitate offense.
Can't wait to see him playing in the Illini uniform.

I wouldn't say that the offense flows, so much as Ty makes the right pass to the open shooter.
Rodgers is definitely going to be our zone busting playmaker from the middle
Goode is probably 9th man and will play mostly the 3/4.
he also plays faster but under control; definitely catching some of his teammates off guard with his passing

And both Davis and Murray were 3 star recruits. Murray still had some height to add. Ty looks quite mature, but I wonder if he has another inch or two to add to his height?
If he can develop a reliable outside shot he will have a long career in the league

I'm not a big zone guy, but the idea of Rodgers at point warms the old cockles. Same with any press. What a terror. Total stud. Good God, I love him.

Another total basketball nerd thing I've noticed is his passes are incredibly crisp and right to the shooters pocket. Kid is special.

I think he could be good there, I just think we have 4 better options for that spot if it exists for us this year. But really if you got that many point options you’re gonna be fine everywhere if it’s a look you wanna have in the bag.

At the very, very, very least, whoever is starting in front of him is going to feel him in practice. Example: Ty's either going to force Coleman to live up to what he could be or he's going to take his spot.
Re: the rankings, I think recruiting sites (and draft gurus and so on) always struggle evaluating those players that they see are successful/winning players but that don't fit neatly in one's conceptions of what a 2-3-4 should be. Guys he's compared to -- Draymond, THT -- were also underrated/under-ranked guys in their careers. Ty's ranking is very similar to THT's. And of course all three (Draymond, THT, Ty) are non-shooters/not-great shooters, so it's seems like they might be a harder fit since they play like a point forward but aren't necessarily built like one. All I know is, right now it seems like the only thing Ty can't do is shoot at a high level and jump out of the gym, and while the former is extremely important in today's game, having all the other skills + intangibles at a high level is a really, really valuable player.
