Goddam Sox tempting us again...

I think at 53-58, their done. They do not have nearly the firepower to reel off a 23-7 type month to get back into it.

I'm just hoping they can figure out a few of these positions by the end of september so we can head into next year knowing what should be happening at 3B, 2B, C, etc.

That's what was most frustrating about the deadline. There's no answer for any of those positions on the farm. We'll have the same team going into next season, most likely.

(unless you believe Saladino, Sanchez and Flowers are the answer)

Yes, I agree. But, I'm also not convinced that we were receiving good offers for our guys. Smardzija would have been a rental, and likely was not returning much.

Quintana and Sale, as we discussed previously, are the only guys on the roster who were going to bring back a potentially team changing return. There is no way they were trading Sale (even if it would have made sense), and I'd bet fans would be outraged with a trade of Q also. I think worries about the fan reaction really tied the GM.

If you want to compete next year, and I think that while you have Sale, you have to be trying to compete each and every year, you're going to have to help yourself through FA. If you look at the list of FA, there are few names that look like difference makers. This makes the task tough. Do you believe in Zobrist? Justin Upton? Ian Desmond?

There are a few SPs, so if you can plug holes with a Quintana trade, you might be able to manage. Of course, the teams that would trade for Quintana could instead just sign the FA SP, which makes that route more difficult.

So who saw the 9th inning dropped 3rd strike debacle last night? In my day a dropped third strike was just that, in the dirt or whatever. As a batter, you ran. As a catcher, you threw to first...simple as that. No confusion, no "well, the ump called him out, so I didn't need to throw..." And in watching the replay of the whole scenario, Flowers and the ump had already exchanged balls before Aybar got to first...so how could the play be properly reviewed?

Granted, the out call on the field stood, but the delay and all the bullchit had to be disruptive to Robertson and the defense. Remove all doubt! Dropped third strike and the batter starts heading to first? Make the peg and be done with it. Batter stands there? Tag him. Abreu was on the bag waiting for the throw...done deal...

The majority of the time, they do just tag him and the ump calls out. Additionally, the batter runs to 1st many of those times after that, too. So when the ump called it, it seemed like business as usual as it has been done 100's of times. Obviously a mistake, but the repetition doesn't always include a throw to 1st when 'Out!' is heard.

Zobrist is 34, Desmond's 29...do not think they would be the right fit. Zobrist actually could be a good fit for the cubs to play all over the field :hurl: being from Illinois and his history with Maddon.

Just Upton could be one, but he's under-performed so much the past few years I really don't believe he will ever be back to that perennial all-star, top 10 MVP level.

I'm just not buying that the return for Samardzija would have been equivalent to the comp pick that we'll get, as reports suggested. Some other reports mentioned the price tag for Shark was high. All I know is we didn't get better one way or another, and we have 1-2 prospects at best that could improve our roster for 2016.

Nothings changed from your day(?). The ump just blew that one. Flowers should have thrown down to first anyway.

As for the Scioscia standing in the line of fire thing....If I'm Robertson, Flowers, Robin, whoever...I'm more than happy to interject and tell them to move. Seems silly not to if you're going to use it as an excuse afterward.

I actually know JUP a little bit. Watch out just didn't some name dropping.

But I think he would be a good fit for a AL team. OF/DH would be a good thing for him. Pass on Zobrist and Desmond. I think the development of Fulmer could be huge for the sox. if he can slot into the rotation a trade of Q might not hurt and could fill a lot of sports. This may be another year down the road.

The jury is out whether Fulmer will be a starter in the bigs. I know that's the organization's plan, but there's some dissent amongst the scouts.

Frankie Montas isn't far away though. He's moved into some of the new top 100 rankings after his no hitter earlier this summer. I believe we landed him in the Peavy deal.

Unless there is a typo, and you actually think that we were offered something good for Smardzija, we're completely on the same page.

What people need to understand in this, is that the pitching staff is ready to compete now, and hopefully next year. Thus, getting a low A, or even a high A player, who will take 4 years to get to the majors (if they make it) is not a good move. The Sox needed to get guys who could play next year.

I agree on Fulmer, but not on Montas. I know he's in the top 100, but if you read the reports, he looks like a bullpen arm to me. His fastball, while hard, is supposedly flat. And his off-speed stuff is apparently average at best.

I don't think they're a good fit either. That was my point. The FA crop is not going to provide the help this team needs.

Great game by Sale yesterday. He can be so dominant at times. The movement on his slider is just ridiculous.

I forget the bAtter, but you know your slider is on point when you toss it to a right handed hitter, get him to swing and miss, and the ball hits his back foot.

Gosh, I sure am glad we picked up the strike out machine, Adam LaRoche.

Seems like the south side is where veteran hitters go to die.

Awesome piece from Stark today though!

"I try to save up any sick days or off days I have, and use them when he's starting," says Cleveland's Jason Kipnis. "I've timed it up perfectly, I think, since 2013.

Yep Bailey, Chris is good...damn good. My mom, 82 years old, ex-Cubbie fan, now a Rays fan, watched the 15 K outing against the Cubbies, she had one word for Sale...wow...

I hope you guys are watching the game tonight. Yeah, it's midnight here (I hate west coast trips!!), Sale on the mound, through 6, 11 Ks, 1 H, Sox up 4-0 against King Felix...

Fun to watch!!!

Sale brings it again (albeit while throwing 119 pitches, dangit), but we can't touch Rick Porcello. Sounds about right.

Remind me again why we couldn't or shouldn't make Jose Quintana available?

We rocked Porcello last month (watched that game, think he went 2 1/3)...tonight, had our number, and his arm is back.

The off-season is soon upon us...
