We're improving as a program but no, this is just not true.

@insiders any insight on Nijel Pack? Making his commitment tomorrow. Hoping it’s not Purdue

EDIT: Sounds like Miami and OSU (figures) got in an NLI bidding war. Would not want to see this guy in the big 10

Spreading false rumors or “locks” on this forum should result in a 5 year ban from OPH and Portillos. This information needs to be verified at the source and then cross examined before sharing. The poster then must wear the flair of shame under their avatar as voted on by the board.

This misinformation completely disrupts my fantasy lineup projections.

Wouldn’t wish an OPH ban on my worst enemy.

Ok maybe I would, but it’s about as harsh a penalty you could think of.

If only you guys knew how difficult some of these players and their "camps" are to deal with....this thread would be a much easier place.
As a former college athlete, I would have never allowed people to tell me where to go. It was my decision and no one else’s. I made the best choice for myself instead of some clown wanting a piece of the action.

Maybe it was different for you, but as a fellow former college athlete nobody was dangling 6 figures worth of cash in my face/offering jobs to family members etc etc. My "camp" probably would have been a lot more entrenched in my college decision if that was the case.

There's nothing wrong with the bolded, I'm just surprised you were donating to basketball in the first place based on your thought process. I consider athletics to be valuable, but never considered big time sports as essential for an academic institution, nor athletics as one of the more impactful areas to donate to "for the university as a whole." Kinda sounds like this decision could have been made for the same reasons 20 years ago.
You make an absolutely valid point. I actually agree & acknowledge my shift. While I stand by the fact that my values have evolved, I can also be fully honest and recognize that part of my decision is ego/legacy driven. When a donor gave a large gift to Illinois athletics 15, 10, or even 5 yrs ago, it felt far more impactful and appreciated. Not that it isn’t appreciated now, I (and others) just feel a little less important and less necessary. Some may disagree but that’s how I feel. -And to clarify since I am getting a lot of pushback, I will always support the Illini as a FAN, just not as a (near naming rights level) financial booster. As said, I believe there’s better use of those funds at U of I outside of athletics moving forward. ……But if I keep getting hate mail, I will direct those funds directly to Michigan State bball! 😆

I'm not going to lie, if my husband and I were ever to produce DI level athletic progeny, there'd be some schools/coaches I wouldn't want my kid playing for. That might change after meeting in person, but public perception counts for a lot.

Howard is at the top of my list as someone I wouldn't want molding my child away from home. Pearl is another. On the flip side, as much as it would hurt to see my kid in black and gold, I'd be happy to hand him over to Matt Painter. That sort of thing.

Also Fran, because I don't want my kid becoming a whiny mope.

I say this with the greatest amount of respect to all parties involved and I'm hopeful no one takes this the wrong way, but here we go.

Some of these kids don't come from families with a lot of resources. It's hard not to blame them or their "camp" for entertaining the best offer for their children's service. $200-$500k is a lot of money to people who have little to nothing. It is what it is- i don't like it, but it's the new era we are living in. We either have to play the game, or be comfortable losing the top dogs to the guys who do play the game. There - I said it. It's not pretty, but it's the truth. I should offer the disclaimer that this doesn't apply to everyone.

... At the same time I see the university building new buildings and expanding like crazy both here and abroad so I don’t feel they are hurting.
For years people were donating buildings and no money to maintain them (90's-2000s). I think UIUC eventually started insisting that a certain percentage of the donation be held back for maintenance. If you want to support a specific major, donating to the maintenance fund for a building that was constructed without a maintenance plan may be an high impact, unsung, act.
