I would imagine he would be able to run still, so his conditioning shouldn't be far off.

Just want to see him average 8-9 rebs/game, i think he has the drive and aggression to do so.

given the initial news ... this is a great outcome ... non-shooting arm, a couple of weeks ... had feared the worst - wrist of shooting hand - 6-12 weeks, never getting touch back until Feb, etc.

1) I think they are evenly good fits for different reasons. Finke has the passing/shooting advantage that will allow for more perimeter based counters and creativity out of that spot. Leron brings the toughness for the screens, the elbow j, and the closer to the basket/alley oop counters. I think what really separates him is the rebounding knack he has. He will be in prime offensive rebound position a lot and I think he will take advantage.

2) For the base guy you're gonna most play at the position, you probably want a combo of Finke/Black (doesn't everybody?). A guy who can play inside outside with guard skills when necessary and toughness to set screens and rebound. That's actually why I'm so excited to see kipper there, because I think he does bring traits of both with plus athleticism. BU said in the clinic that who they put there and what they do is based on how the other team guards the cuts and that guy at certain parts of the offense. He will then get the right guy in there for the right counter based on how the defense is playing.

FiveStar, I just want to say that I appreciate your insight to all of this. You have been a wealth of knowledge. Thank you.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Like everybody else I'm just excited to see the season start. BU is probably the most cerebral coach we've had in my lifetime (I'm 30, could also just be my extreme pro BU bias). I think we're gonna be in for an awesome ride.

This was the first Spread video I saw after seeing Underwood in the clinic. Sound is a bit low. I just chromecasted it to my tv so I could turn it up and hear everything. Favorite takeaways:

1) the number of times Underwood asks, "how do you guard that?" It's hilarious.
2) for the tilmon wasn't a fit for this offense crowd, BU talks about all the post looks they get in the offense.
3) he goes into a couple basic counters we should see a lot this year.

I like how right off the bat he talks about a good Iowa St team and how they were all about the same height. We love to joke about creating the Flying Illini 2.0...but we might actually see it at some point with BU.:chief:

He's also put the positions things to rest when he said positions 1-4 are interchangable about 2 minutes in.

Thanks for posting the clinic. I hadn't seen that one. I'm so ready to see an offense run with purpose.

Here is a line up for you all to have discussion. You all constantly talk about needing a quality big to be successful....which is technically very debatable .....

Villanova Wildcats National Champs

G 0 Henry Lowe 5'11
G 1 Jalen Brunson 6'2
F 2 Kris Jenkin 6'6
G 3 Josh Hart 6'5
F 4 Eric Paschall 6'7
G 5 Phil Booth 6'3
G 10 Donte DiVincenzo 6'5
G 15 Ryan Arcidiacono 6'3
F 20 Patrick Farrell 6'5
F 23 Daniel Ochefu 6'11
G/F 25 Mikal Bridges 6'7
F 34 Tim Delaney 6'9
F 45 Darryl Reynolds 6'8
F 52 Kevin Rafferty 6'8

Solid back court play but not a dominate big very guard oriented offense

Man, Ochefu was such an absolute stud in that game. I recall his box score being unobtrusive, but he bottled up Kennedy Meeks. No small achievement.

Some more really good Underwood spread resources. Oregon spread stuff too as a bonus. Altman does some things with the second cutter that BU doesn't that I really like. BU seems to like have stuff flow more into the continuity, or isolate within regular Spread spacing. Altman seems more prone to cutting off the continuity for the right iso and spacing to more traditional areas once that happens. Man I really can not wait for this season. I'm gonna drive myself crazy.

I know Groce was younger and had a lot less experience, and I know Weber has plenty of training videos out there so obviously it isnt something new, but I feel like Underwood has a ton of videos explaining a lot of his ideologies. I like it--a lot, that he can be so open yet so effective on the court with his teams. Probably just revisional at this point, but having such a strong identity, propensity to be fluid with his plans, and the effectiveness this all brings just makes me feel that his floor is so much higher than what we've been used to.

Maybe we dont make the tourney this year, but I'd much rather watch an exciting loss than a boring one (preferably neither ;) )

I think Underwood's system is hard to implement. You really need coachable guys that are also athletic gym rats. Agree that he comes across as much more focused.

True I guess, but if I agree with you are we admitting Groce had an actual system?

I know it was only one year, but the turn around that OSU had midseason under him points to what you said and also his willingness to alter key parts of his system. Maybe it was a combination of both. maybe not, but he made some change that propelled them to be a tournament team that could've gone further if they didn't get matched against arguably the hottest team entering march madness. Obviously, this probably worked in our favor.

Whether or not the system is hard to implement, he seems to be skilled at implementing it. As we all well know, he has done so with inherited players at two different schools already, and made the tourney both times. Five Star is more qualified to weigh in on how hard it actually is to implement, but it does seem like Underwood's results indicate that he has been up to the challenge.

Illinois coach Brad Underwood feels as though Illini could surprise some people this year. Can be good defensively, lack depth, need leader.

Underwood raved to me about frosh point guard Mark Smith and his work ethic. Said he can be a Jason Kidd-type of player due to size at spot.

Underwood also said he is hopeful that freshman Da’Monte Williams, who is coming off a torn ACL, will be ready for first day of practice.

Honestly, it seems a lot easier to implement for me because it doesn't rely so heavily on having the right pieces as much as it does having guys that work hard. Hard work ethic and busting your butt is a culture thing. If that gets instilled from day one (especially with all these freshmen), then they should be able to run the system very well.

Just for my own information, I noticed a few football, and actually several basketball games are being aired on FS1 this year. What's the reasoning behind that? To follow that point, why BTN+? is this a ploy to just be on as many networks as possible for the $$?

Like I said, we will probably see a 7 or 8 man rotation. Still plenty of time for the freshmen to force their way into the lineup though.
