OK, moral dilema here. My best friend from high school went to Iowa. I went to Illinois. We're old. We're still great friends. This goes back to when we were both in school in the early 90s when I roadtripped to Iowa City and saw both our football and basketball teams win there despite obnoxious Hawkeye fans rattling car keys every time Deon Thomas shot a free throw. And him coming to Champaign to watch Nick Bell run all over a great Illini team in the most demoralizing Illinois football loss I've seen in my lifetime.

Now we're getting to that next milestone of the big 5-0. UGH!! But we saw this matchup in NYC and thinking what a great time to go see both our favorite teams play. I watch Illinois beat Texas, then don't know what to do when Duke and Iowa play. (honestly, I'd probably quietly pull for Duke)

I'm thinking lifelong frendship has to (slightly) top my hatred for Iowa, right, and the two of us do this trip together? And my friend and I have a great time in NYC, get to see the teams we live and die for play on the big stage. Or am I so petty that if I have to see Iowa win and Illinois lose it ruins the whole experience and I have a miserable 12-hour car ride back to Illinois?

Sports, man, so irrational when you think about it...

UNC trumps all
I'm over the UNC thing. Took me a decade or more, but I'm over it. Iowa and Michigan currently host my top hate spots.

A lot of my Duke hate went out the door with Coach K. His ridiculous retirement tour was chefs kiss on that chapter for me.

Scheyer seems like a pretty solid dude. (This is subject to change)
Lol, I like how you leave yourself some wiggle room for hating at a later date.
If Grandi goes to Duke I hope UI plays them in the ACC challenge, and I hope it's St. John's & Curbelo in the Gavitt games

We’ll get to see what we’re made of for sure. Hope things click fast for this new group.
This is too challenging for comfort. At least for me. These guys need some time to gel and develop. It would probably take at least the first month of the season for that to happen. Oh well, you can't beat the best if you don't play 'em.

Tough choice but actually would root for BIG Iowa over ACC Duke. Never, ever, ever root for a blue blood.
Most replies seem to be leaning the other way, but this here for me. Actually seems a bit easy, given the friendship and the blue blood opponent - might be different if Iowa were playing a 'neutral' opponent. Then again I compartmentalized my hate for Pearl specifically, more so than for Iowa.

And to the original poster, as one of those Illini on the other side of 50, thanks for making me feel extra old today! 😉

Lot better than spending 3/4 of the non-con playing Austin Peay and Longwood and E. Tennessee State and so forth. Take it as a compliment. Pretty refreshing to know that the powers at be are inviting us to these types of games even when they know we've had basically the whole roster turnover this spring.

Recency bias, but he moved up my dislike scale with the handshake line incident. And besides, he's the father of several dislikable McCafferys.
Generally dislike Connor and Fran but I gotta admit, Patrick lessened my reflexive dislike of anything ending in "McCaffery" when he tweeted about how ridiculous/absurd the RJ tech was in the Houston game. Believe it was more than once too if memory serves me right. I would without a doubt put Hunter Dickinson above that clan on the detest scale. That dude makes sure to live up to his last name every chance he gets.
