Illinois 20, Maryland 17 Postgame

Laughery is a great change of pace back. I don't see him as a run establisher.

Barnett is a prototype RB. It's time to get past whatever "ball security" issues we haven't seen and give him the ball 20 times per game.

Laughery 3rd down back. Jordan Anderson for some short yardage and rest spelling.

But hey...I'm no Barry Lunney Jr......
Laughery’s averaging 6.9 yards per carry on the season. He had 13 carries for 123 yards (9.5 yards per carry) against Oregon last week.

Yes, you’re no Barry Lunney Jr.

A favorite stat of mine:

From Mike White's arrival in 1980 to 1995 we won at least 3 Big Ten games 15 times in 16 seasons.

Ron Guenther refused to acknowledge that Lou Tepper had lost all credibility after 1995 and allowed the program, recruiting and roster completely collapse, a hole RG never charted a path out of.

From 1996 to 2020 we won at least 3 Big Ten games just 8 times in the next 25 seasons.

As of today, we have won at least 3 Big Ten games in all six of Bielema's seasons at the helm.

Josh Whitman and Bret Bielema have, at long last, de-Guentherized Illinois Football.

He broke one big run and otherwise had 5 carries for 16 yards. He's definitely good enough to play but let's not act like hes miles ahead of Laughery yet. Higher ceiling for sure but Laughery and Anderson have definitely earned their role with good all around play beyond just running the ball.

Edit to add Laughery averaging 6.9 ypc coming in. Dude has just been good this year.

It's not a direct comparison or a slight at Laughery. It's the type of back. If you really want to play Bielema ball.....which I really, really do (hat tip @pruman91).....JB is your RB1.

I don't mean exclusively, just primarily.

Huge shout-out to Cooper. He has the defense in position to make some plays and by and large they have made them. Could be coaching his way on the staff next year.
Matt Bailey has been a pro.

Happy for Coach B after what had to be one of the toughest weeks of his life. For all the not so complimentary comments I can post at times, at the end of the day, these coaches and athletes are humans with real world problems. Speaking for myself, it can be hard to remember that as I sit on my couch lol. Proud of the team for getting the win for Bret and Arnie. Now let’s beat Nebraska!

That’s what you get when you end up on top at the end.

I mean, I don't think anybody is calling for us to turn the running game over to JB. But the guy is getting 5 carries a game and doing work with them. He should be getting double, 2.5x that. I think that is pretty easy to see. Maybe a handful of those no gainers up the middle get 2-3 yards at the very least???

I noticed Oregon keying on that last week.

"If 24 is in the game it's going to him"
Not even necessarily that. He has just struggled to retain stuff so it has to be simple stuff when he’s in. Pass pro is also a problem. Also if you listen to Bret’s post game presser he said he has a RB that would have scored there instead of taking a knee like Jordan did and thats why the other RB wasn’t in the game…..he ain’t talking about Aiden lol

Agreed, Gunther was the worst thing to happen to Illinois sports.
