Illinois 77, Ohio State 74 Postgame

Yes...I am quite certain that no team playing in the NCAA tourney will play intense defense, especially on MD. Not a chance...which of course will make the Illini path to the FF pretty easy. Need to go book a room in Phoenix area...and get a tee time.

Sooooo, after losing my brother on February 4th, I lost my 67 yo brother-in-law, my sister’s husband, to pancreatic cancer this afternoon. Even though he was a staunch UW and Packer fan, he appreciated my family’s fanaticism to Illinois. At times tonight, with my heart already hurting, I thought I might be next. Thank you, Coleman, Dain, Ty, and Terrence, for pulling this one out. I’m toasting with vodka to Russell and my Illini tonight… 🧡 💙
So sorry for your loss.

I L L.....

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but Jameson Battle is 0-5 against Illinois in his career, averaging 18.2 points a game, including 24.3 in his final 3 games.
I was going to mention it if no one else did.

Also, Jake Diebler as never beaten the Illini as a head coach. (Is he the new Juwan Howard?) ;)

My sincere sympathies. My 81 yo brother may not make it to see the Illini play in the 2024 NCAA tournament. May not be much joy in Mudville...even with an Illini win.

This cannot be understated. Ty was freaking incredible tonight. Was by far our best defender tonight, was incredible on the boards winning several he had absolutely no business getting, and then being a bucket getter when nobody else wanted to shoot. That Ty we saw tonight is that supporting cast player that is a reason your team goes deep in the tourney. Played like The Reverend tonight. We're going to need that.
Yes Ty is playing like his early season self again.

Evidently Brad told them to foul and they did not, which is concerning.
That's wild because Harmon had such a good opportunity to foul Thornton before he passed it to Battle. Would have been free throws with like 4 seconds left, so if you get the ball in they're desperation mode to get a shot off.

Battle honestly got a good look too. Just didn't go down.

Strategically and analytically yes it's the right move ... But it requires tactical execution. When in the last few years have you felt confident that we can in bound the ball late in the game? I don't think I have ever felt comfortable. If we foul and then turn it over it all fails.

But we won so I'll pour myself a victory beverage and hope for the best. On to tomorrow!
Yes it also requires fouling at the right time. You want to wait to let them run clock but also don't want to make it even close to where you could get a 4 or play.

Some positives this game for sure (Dain, Ty, TJ, late-game Coleman), but I have some concerns heading into the tourney…

1. Coleman doesn’t look right. He’s been saying all year he’s significantly limited by his leg, but his movement looked much worse than it has tonight. I wonder if it’s been aggravated or if he’s not resting it sufficiently. After seeing him move laterally I wondered if his unwillingness to shoot is coming from him knowing he can’t get his legs under his shot properly right now.

2. Love TJ, hell of a player, but I’m worried he won’t get some of these whistles he relies on when he out of control throws himself at the defense in the tourney, and it will mess with him and the team’s rhythm.

3. Don’t know what was up with Domask tonight. He’s been our steadiest, most reliable guy this season and he just didn’t have it tonight. The handle was shaky, he didn’t have the touch on his jumpers or around the rim, had a bad turnover late.

4. Was really encouraged seeing QG return to form against Iowa and am equally discouraged by him completely no-showing tonight. Him crashing the boards on both ends makes us a way better team, and he didn’t do that at all.

5. Bench production outside of Dain was pretty rough.

Domask had an off game. Does that have something to do with OSU’s defense? I can’t tell but do feel like OSU had high defense intensity. I hope this won’t happen in the tournament. We need Domask’s offense period.
OSU threw two guys at him whenever he closed in. Late, he took notice of that and found both Ty and Dain on multiple occasions.

I thought Domask played ok but things didn't go his way tonight. He had 5 or 6 shots that he normally always makes that bounced or rolled out. Those go in he's right around his normal offensive output. He basically was doing the same thing he has been doing the last several games. His shots just weren't falling tonight.

Thank you Carol! Carol! Plus I don't hate having a 6'10 dude who can stay in front of guards making the 3 a really hard shot.

If you have a risk of turning the ball over then just guard the 3. I could be wrong
