Am I the only one who thinks TSJ isnt getting the foul calls driving the lane like before the suspension?
Not sure how much of it is what (I think) you're implying, and how much of it is how out-of-control he looks when doing so. Refs have always discounted fouls for the latter.

Fouled or not, I also constantly worry about injury. He goes to the floor almost every time. At some point that will catch up to him.

I wish he would just play off two feet even just occasionally. He'd be even more dangerous, imo.

But then again, he was just a first team All American like 6 weeks ago so what do I know?

There's a difference between guys getting wide open looks, and guys hitting tough shots. I didn't see a bunch of the former. Nebraska was hitting contested shots. There were multiple scrambles for loose balls that ended up in the hands of a Husker and resulted in a 3. Creating chaos is a goal of the defense. It just seemed like all the bounces were going their way for stretches.
Every team has multiple games where an opponent goes off, and it's not luck. Just as every top 10 team has had to win a handful of games ugly. We see them all the time, we just don't notice them as much because they don't cause us coronary events. Every team in the league has guys who are extremely capable of hurting you. Even the best teams are only a few possessions better than most of the teams in their league. It's always a rock fight.

Amen. Why i quit betting on college basketball years ago. .

It's hard to complain about a guy that has a very strong argument for being the best wing in the country but he would be unstoppable if he learned to change speeds a bit. He doesn't have to be going full speed all the time, he can slow down and use his size to create open looks for himself and others much like you see with Domask.

NBA is a totally different animal, Big Ten officiating has never been good, worst in all the major conferences, and definitely the most inconsistent every game, both ways, but home court is worth 5 points in missed/no calls
It could always be worse.

Pouring one out for Charlie tonight.

And I just want to put this out in the world because...you never know. I lost my brother a year ago in Dec. 22. I think I posted about it.

We've been Texas Rangers fans from the womb....and somehow they made a magical run to World Series Champions last year.

I like to think my bro was directing that magical season.

Now I hope Charlie is directing this Illini MBB team to a magical March this year. :illinois::hailtotheorange:
I want to thank you all, my IllinoisLoyalty famILLy, for your kind words and support. This may be a small anonymous internet community, but I really feel the heartfelt sincerity of almost 200 of my Illini brothers and sisters, and I am overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion so many of you have shown. @Dan, I want to thank you for creating such a wonderful forum. It is truly special. @skyIdub , I want to thank you for this post. Again, I’m so sorry about the loss of your “Bro.” The thought has crossed my mind that maybe, just maybe, Charlie, can help direct an Illini NC run with the same result…I’m going to pour myself one tonight and toast to that hope as well. 🧡💙

That makes up for guerrier getting hit in the mouth on a dunk attempt
And TSJ getting tackled on a drive....
And ColeHawk getting hand-checked to his face....
And.......

The thing is, that it is hard to know what to expect from the officials. Last night, they let a lot of stuff go, so we should have been dropping the hammer on Mast and Tominaga. Other games, it is called so tight that if you look at someone wrong, they call a foul. No consistency! Have to be able to figure it out quickly and adjust.

We need a new DC ...

We need new out-of-bounds plays ...

We need to practice in bounding the ball ...

Less 3s please ...

All that being said ... Win is a win ... Would rather learn from a win than a loss ...

On to the next ...

Illini took 34 threes and 36 inside the arc, what the hell? We are not that good as 3-point shooters to take 34 in a game
Shot 56% inside arc, 26% outside it
I know Underwood has encouraged guys to take three-pointers and Nebraska gave them plenty of open shots from beyond arc, but no way this team with its size and strength should have an essential 50-50 ratio in its shots, especially when it was apparent that their three-point accuracy was not there yesterday
Not being more aggressive in driving inside played into Nebraska's hands

This team is elite at defending without fouling, but I do sometimes think there's a Jekyll and Hyde to that where we can be a bit of a soft touch around the basket.

Sometimes just mugging a guy to let him know you're there can have a certain beneficial psychological effect.

I am 100% in the pro Underwood camp but he did the quick timeout thing right after TSJ hit the 3 to put us up 10. I think the quick timeout after a score is good when making a comeback, but not when we have all of the momentum.
He did acknowledge the potential downside of doing that in his presser.

I actually thought we played pretty well for large portions of the game. Cannot collapse that like in regulation, just unacceptable. Glad we get to learn from a win.

Also, Nebraska played/shot out of their minds today. Actually thought the d on some of the threes was really good, Tominaga was just on one. That is a legit NCAA Tourney team and we got their A+ game

Scratching my head about Justin's failure to call TO and toss that panicked inbound lob to Coleman. [EDIT: Also, lmao on that play at Allick pushing Coleman away vigorously with one hand to get position for the ball and no foul call.]
Was sitting 2 rows off the floor, and had a very good look at that play. Yes, Harmon should have used better judgement, but Hell Yeah Coleman got fouled like crazy on that play. He got undercut and pushed off his spot when he went up for the ball!

They way Nebraska defends leads to a lot of 3 point looks….Goode was 0-6 on good looks….you want him to shoot those every time. Harmon 0-4 on very good looks as well. TJ missed a couple good looks and took some bad ones(not ideal). Really in short our offense generated good looks from 3 for Coleman, Goode and Harmon they just didn’t fall for the latter two.

And yet, we were up 10 late. We will truly be elite when we seize what we have but not turning the ball over during this time. This happened with Marquette so it is a pattern.

Also, I forget where I read about “kill shots” that measured a teams ability to go on a 10-0 run, and we ranked high in that category. But we also ranked high to give them up. We have to work on that aspect.
I have a hard time dealing with Domask walking the ball across half court. The initiation of the offense slows everyone down and no one is moving. I would like to see him pass the ball and try to get the matchup he likes for a post up closer to the basket.

We have an extremely "take what the defense gives you" philosophy, which makes sense with a team deep with experienced and intelligent players with high-level bucket-getting ability. This group will find a good look with 30 seconds of offense.

There is always some sense in which "take what the defense gives you" becomes "do what the defense tells you" though.

I dunno, there's something metronome-like about this team that is too much for a lot of opponents to stand up to over 40 minutes but becomes kinda rote and predictable in the wrong light.

Also get one step closer to the basket before leaving his feet. He will get the foul calls if he can be just a little more patient with the drive. Is it me or has he lost the handle again. No quite as bad as last year but not as good as the start of this year. Seemed like he had tightened it up.

It's not just you. His handles have definitely loosened up since his return.

This win is for my big brother (74) who I lost this morning to a heart attack, the guy who initiated my passion for all things Illini. He’s the reason I went to Illinois as he was a senior when I was a freshman. There ya go, Charlie! This one’s for you! 🧡 💙

Each of us has our ‘blood’ family.

Many of us have a workplace family.

Many of us have a church family.

Many of us have a hobbies family.

And (around places like this) people like us have our sports-fanatics family.

And very often... we find some in our blood family that also are part of our sports fanatics family. And that is powerful. Two strong ‘families’ of ours that bond us together that amplify our brother-and-sister-hood to each other and our passion for a common interest beyond what flows in our veins. That passion gives energy and joy to our lives. And it creates that unique bond between sports-brothers/sisters.

Without the bonds of love and friendship and common interest and purpose... no sport of any kind means much of anything. Just an expenditure of energy and movement until and unless we add a layer of meaning and significance to what goes on there.

We are expecially blessed whenever we find our blood family and sports family blending together. A bond like no other. And the times that we share together go on without end. They live within us as much as the breath we take.

Blessings to you and to all of us who see ourselves in you in this moment.

Take catch and shoot 3's in rhythm when open nearly every time. Water will find its mark for most of our guys, and on average they will hit many of them. This is what causes teams to have to close out hard, and opens up space for passes inside or rip drives to the basket. Also, it is disingenuous to make claims about the ratio of shots we should take from 2 versus 3. Much of this depends on the opponent, the defense that we are facing, the personnel on the floor, etc. Speaking of yesterday's game, there were several shots from outside that were less than ideal, however there were several times that we (Q especially) turned down open looks in rhythm from 3. While it didn't work out yesterday, I want Luke taking those open 3's whenever he gets them. Harmon too. Especially because we are a great offensive rebounding team. Historically, we have scored many shots at the rim after an offensive rebound after a missed 3.

I agree - unless the other team is pressing/trapping us I think somebody else should move the ball up the floor quickly.

Damask has been playing close to 40 minutes per games. I think there were couple games where he did play 40. Brad has to substitute for him so he can rest some. In last 5 minutes of couple games he looked exhausted and made some bad turnoves trying to back in. I think it is also affecting his defense.

I would be more comfortable having him or Luke in bounds the ball. No more Harmon please.

This is my biggest gripe with officiating. It changes from game to game, crew to crew. There is zero consistency. I don't watch other leagues enough to know if it's the same everywhere, but I suspect it's a flaw that hurts the B1G annually to some extent during the NCAA Tournament.

Yes, they called that on Rodgers stepping over (as the shooter). Was bound to happen as he does it as routine/every FT attempt. I then noticed his next FT attempt he kept himself from stepping in, and missed badly. So hopefully, it isn't a thing where he needs that forward step for whatever reason to make them.
I think it's his instinct to go after every rebound. When ANY shot goes up, he is the first to move for the rebound.
