The 2012 coaching staff was a total mess, like a rare, toxic environment to be a coach (or a player). The terrible on-field performance was just the tip of the iceberg.

A lot of fingers got pointed at Luke Butkus in the aftermath. A lot of those fingers belonged to coaches who are themselves now pretty severely discredited in our and many other eyes. Tough to say exactly what went down.

If Butkus was a total clown he wouldn't have lasted on Gus Bradley's staff. Unless of course he's just Shad Khan's favorite guy. Not sure what Occams Razor is here.

This is pretty much how I feel. Whitman wouldn't be bold enough to make such huge moves just to watch the house of cards get rebuilt. I'll withhold judgment for once.

If Butkus was that much of an idiot would Lovie really hire him? Not talking about Xs and Os, talking personality here. Seems like opposite attitude of Lovie if he really is that hard to work with.

im not impressed, but I never led a team to the super bowl either

Again, I'm not questioning Lovie's coaching acumen. I think he's a fantastic hire. I'm worried that the things that got him in trouble down in Tampa will crop up here too. Nepotism and previous working relationships don't rank high on my list of hiring priorities, and I would hope they don't rank high for a coach that's about to spend an unprecedented amount of money on a coaching staff.

I'll reserve my judgement until the staff is filled out, but Butkus does not impress me in the slightest.

Red Grange's grand son is available

Think Red Grange's grandson can coach running backs?

I'm holding out hope that isn't confirmed. From what I heard this was a pretty good disaster the first time around and it wasn't just Beckman.
Funny story. I hired a guy in Tucson to lay some tile for me. I never mentioned U of I until he was finished and we were filling out the paper work. When I mentioned that I was an Illini Alum, he told me he was Red Grange's grand son. Can't be true, right? Well he was a big guy, red haired. He said he was the grandson of Red's first wife. He knew lots of stuff that is not common knowledge about how Red left his first wife and how he arranged his estate. Why would he know that? He wouldn't have researched it because he didn't know I was an Illini and he already was paid so there was no reason to lie. I believe him!

FIRE LOVIE

Too funny.

I know YOU are kidding, but for the rest, can we see if he actually gets hired before ripping him?

Since Lovie was rumored, then eventually hired, we have had at least three different OC "targets," a couple DC targets and many other rumored position coaches. This may be just another rumor.

That being said, I would love a more detailed account of his time here. I respect quhawks, but would like more info please

Other than hiring his one son, who else did he hire that wasn't nominally qualified for their position? Everyone I can find looks like they were a lateral move or better.

On a positive note, Butkus is credited as the lead recruiter for Aaron Bailey, so it seems he proved himself as a talented recruiter in limited time.

Butkus is a fine hire. Wait to see the OC and DC before getting all worked up. Gonna be a well rounded staff.

Butkus gonna be crucial to recruiting.

As someone who was personally recruited by Luke Butkus, I say great hire.

I don't understand the backlash he is getting

Illini guy/great person/nfl and college experience/knows his stuff/good recruiter

Not to mention his last name is Butkus

He also has a B1G championship ring.

Because that season was a complete disaster and OL wasn't any better. Like i said, it was a bad OL that year because of either lack of talent or we had to play young players that weren't ready.

I mean, there were coaches that weren't on speaking terms with each other and there were different position groups that were being signaled different plays during that season. It's so much more than just "oh, X and Y coaches didn't do a good job". It was chaos.

If Butkus is paid 200K a year, which I think is a reasonable estimate, that means only 5% of the allotted 4M has been accounted for.

The big names are coming...

Plus you get someone with college experience and can recruit Illinois. I think 4years with the Jags is a good learning experience for him.

So far, it's looking like Garrick McGee at OC/QB, Hayes-Stoker at WR, Butkus at OL, Scheelhaase at RB (or other capacity), Hardy Nickerson at DC/LB, and Phair at DL. hard to imagine more than $2.6m soaked up between those six, which leaves $1.4m for the final three hires (if the rumors all hold up - obviously a big if). We'd still need a DB coach, ST coach, possibly TE, possibly LB, and one of those would be Recruiting Coordinator.

If Lovie brings on his son Mikal to coach DB for around $200k, I imagine we'll pay $650,000 or more for a big time recruiting coordinator.

For the most part, me neither.

Are we really going to be pointing fingers at someone for not being their best self under the Tim Beckman regime?

Not even sure I can say I was my best self under the Beckman regime. ;)
