There are too many loonys on this board... Trolls, if you will... When's the last time a "package" deal for two players has come to fruition in college basketball? Or the last time someone flipped a commitment because they're friend went elsewhere? From the moment he commited JT said he knew for awhile Illinois was where he was going. And all these "insiders" who say what they want just to feel special when in reality they think they have scoop, but they know no more than anyone else. At the end of the day, these are 17-18 year old kids who change their minds weekly, and that's quite fine. Recruiting is fluid. Always.

This quote from the Belleville article has me feeling better!:thumb:

Tilmon said he was as surprised as anyone when Goodwin last Friday announced he would play at St. Louis University instead. But that announcement had no influence on Tilmon's decision to go to East Side instead of Althoff, he said, nor will it cause him to reconsider his commitment to Illinois.

I agree with most of this but thought I'd drop Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones. But that's Coack K and not T-bag!

This board for almost a year preached a package deal of Pickett, Tilmon and Goodwin. Saw it almost every day.

He committed to pressure Goodwin, so we will see if he schedules an OV to either UNC or KU. Would be less than shocking from what I have heard.

Committed to pressure another kid??? No offense but that just sounds ridiculous. DJ Williams and Charles Matthews are like family and they didn't go to the same school. Ive said it a couple times, some of you are putting way to much into the friendship of JG/JT. Tilmon has a closer relationship with the coaching staff than Goodwin.

Not necessarily true, speculation at best. Fans always like to exaggerate or diminish the effect of friendship when it comes to athletes making a decision. A popular opinion had been that Goodwin will choose to follow Tilmon at UI, an opinion further proliferated by desire and optimism after Tilmon made his decision. On the other hand, there has been an increase in posts after Goodwin's decision, diminishing his friendship with Tilmon. Both of those are highly biased opinions.

Truth is that friendship, as you correctly noted DJW and Matthews, is most often not the deciding factor in making a college or business decision. That does not make friendship any weaker or less important. Heck, there are brothers who always lived and played together, stronger bond than anyone can imagine, who chose to play for different countries at the same time, different coaches and national teams. Yet, their bond is stronger than anything. But not the deciding factor.

I know for a fact from some of the coaches in AAU circuit that Goodwin/Tilmon are very close and their friendship is very strong, and will remain so. Just not necessarily the deciding factor, as portrayed by many fans due to the desire to land both (or desire not to lose both).

Whatever the situation with other schools, anytime ESLHS is involved, qualifying academically becomes a big concern.

Not so sure the high school is to blame. If tilmon or any other student wants to qualify for college via estl, I am quite certain they have just as good an opportunity as at any other high school in the area. The environment around the high school may be the issue. He will be coached by phil Gilbert who played at estl and then Bradley where he graduated. As far as I know Terry Hawthorne from estl was never in trouble while at ui.

So we've got Jeremiah, Roy and MOB reassuring us. I'm good to go. Actually I'm always good to go. Who ever shows up at the beginning of a season is who I root for. But having followed Illini basketball since before the Slush Fund days, I will say it was a lot easier following recruiting before the internet. I'm sure all this in and out, back and forth, school wars and rumor of wars went on all the time back in the day, we just never heard about it.

@michaelsobrien i know its early but do u feel this affects his commitment since he is closer to slu now?

@robjilla I wouldn’t think so.

Thanks for noticing that question. Mr O'Brien usually knows what is going on when it comes to ISHA. He has never steered me wrong. I had to ask and I was satisfied with his answer. I hope tilmon sticks it out, frazier commits and we get that big fish, either a big man or wilkes/scruggs.

It's anecdotal, admittedly, but ESL seems to consistently fail to get their top athletes into school at a rate not matched by other similarly situated high schools.

And balance that against LaLu being a diploma mill we can guarantee will do whatever it takes (the reason Tilmon went there in the first place) and I think there's ample reason for the switch to be concerning.

This. How many people here chose a school because a friend was going there? I would guess it's 1% or less.

Is that truly the reason Tilmon went there? ESL had a pretty rough teacher strike that delayed the start of school last year. I was under the impression, maybe errantly, that the teacher strike was one of the leading drivers for his transfer to LaLu.

That's pretty amazing, but I assume that there are scholarships for students in need and basketball players

I did my internship at The Ensworth school in Nashville. I assume it's similar to LaLu. I know they gave out some scholarships to guys. Shut they aren't technically allowed to recruit players there. The players have to come to them first. Their employees get half off for their kids. It's still a steep price though.
