Not much when you can do when:
Kid makes a promise
Kid goes behind your back and goes on another college visit
You up the NIL (Highest by far for any of the schools)
Get kids family behind Illinois
Kid still goes somewhere else
RayJ owed the Illini nothing. He's a merc, going to the third team in his career, probably not going to make a ton of money in pro basketball and had to do what he had to do. Play silly games (trying to build your roster entirely through the transfer portal) and win silly prizes. Nobody should be surprised when you go the route of hiring 1 year mercenaries and then they behave like mercenaries.

You mean like we did last year and they all transferred ?
Indy, you sound like you are," Mark Tupper" ,Decatur. And would literally start writing articles to get our coaches fired. Relax, I thought you retired. Go fishing, 😆 🤣
We will be just fine! Trust the staff.

Listen:
I get the frustration. It's a bad miss. But there is only so much the staff could do here. Could they have taken someone instead of RayJ? Yes, but hindsight is 20/20. They are going to land a point guard
is it to late to get in the Zyon Pullin sweepstakes?

What really gets me is that this is exactly what caused the downfall of Weber and force. Chasing a player that they don’t get while other good players go elsewhere.

I remember being told that Corey Fisher really wanted to come here but we were chasing rose.

I know we missed on PGs bc of sherron Collins.

And this one isn’t a PG, but there was some highly rated SG wing that went to Tennessee that supposedly really wanted to come here but then said in an interview that he sick of hearing about being the backup plan to Jon Sheyer

I thought this staff was immune to that I guess.

Well, that's the version you've heard.

But really, it all goes back to discernment.

When the early May visits happened and we were supposedly going to get the return visit after Michigan, plenty of people raised that as a red flag and you did the "nothing to worry about, all part of the plan" chat. Turns out the average Joe on a message board apparently could grasp the situation better than the basketball staff (as reported by "insiders")

So there's nothing to do about this type of situation if you remain gullible.

How is our situation worse. We didn’t have any pg’s last yr either. We’re looking at a similar situation maybe better since Moretti has a yr in the system. Epps wasn’t a pg he sucked at distributing and Clark didn’t do much and left us. We will be fine especially if we can add someone that can distribute.
I trust the roster isn't complete yet, but there's nothing suggesting the players coming in are better at basketball than the players who left other than typical offseason message board optimism.

If we're better it'll be because Hawkins finds his consistency and Rodgers blows up. Not because of roster overhaul.

During this “portal season” we had 4-5 guys who wanted to come here and play PG … All of them are at P5 schools and would be better than anyone we’ll get now … 🤷🏻‍♂️
I guess the question for me is was it Brad that had a false sense of security in this recruitment that stopped him from pursuing the others or was it TA that was telling Brad it was a done deal. Kinda like some of the old Snacks/Weber situations

Of all the bad recruiting misses in Illini history, this isn't quite Eric Gordon level bad, but it's up there.
Nope… these days are completely different. It’s now the Recruiting Thunderdome in the offseason.
This RayJ deal proves it.

I also motion for Dan to rename the recruiting thread Illinois Recruting Thunderdome.

they could have demanded that he still entered the portal and committed to us before the draft stuff shook out, or else we go after other people. I know Dingle going from Penn to St. John's did that and I think there are more too.

I'm not disagreeing. But if comments here are true that we had most NIL on table and we had similar if not more play time to offer, what other factors played in here that Baylor came out on top. Baylor has been better and had more tourney success but isn't that why we brought in underwood, to have those things. I'm not saying we lost out due to those reasons but it is one point of distinction between our programs.
Drew has been a draw for a while. For a variety of reasons, he's pretty far ahead of BU for most players.
