I thought they were already at 13 scholarships. How do they get an extra scholarship for all the talk of another point guard

I apologize if this has already been discussed. I’ve heard rumblings that Justin Harmon won’t be able to transfer to illinois. Could Lville, Indy and/or Illini0440 confirm or deny this?
I believe an insider on one of these boards casually mentioned that it's not Brad's fault if Harmon didn't have his grades in order. It was thrown out there when discussing who's scholarship might open up if Illini found a real point guard for this upcoming season. I read many Illini boards and it was shortly after RayJ went elsewhere. I apologize in advance to anyone offended.

We have any sort of PG list? Really feels like we don’t even have names of dudes that are mediocre left available.

My best guess is the staff is looking to maximize one more roster spot rather than reach for a PG just because it’s an area of need.
Staff would love to take a PG and knows it’s top priority but they have no leads or interest from anyone good enough to play in the big ten after they struck out of RayJ and assumed Yuri would be interested as backup but never actually had an ounce of interest. They’d rather go try to get Reaves because even though he doesn’t fill their biggest need, he’s a solid player that can contribute. But if there were any real PG options they’d prioritize that over Reaves

Doesn’t that have something to do with a bullfrog?

For what it's worth, Southern Miss were the regular season conference champions in the Sun Belt after going 1-17 in CUSA the prior season. So they had quite the turnaround. Looks like they'll be remaking their roster through the Transfer Portal this year (like they did last year), but hopefully a good opportunity the next couple years for Curbelo to end college on a high point (he'll likely need to get a waiver due to coaching change to be eligible next season).
And one of those “remaking the roster” transfers will be Nick Krass, guard from Oregon State. Not likely to be a big contributor next year, but it was the only thing I could add on the subject. 😀

I still can't beleive we don't have a true point guard?!?!?! We haven't had good guards since Self was here. Brad really screwed da pooch on this one no doubt about it.

Throwing out a "point" name from the current transfer portal because point guard discussion is interesting. We lived through the Groce years. We exalted through the Ayo! years. We Curbelo'd our enthusiasm during the pre- and post-concussion years. We're not yet 100% sold on Jeremiah Williams.

Apparently there is some hope that a senior point guard fulfills his graduation requirements in the coming months and elects to be a last-minute grad transfer... but this guy who has played one year of college ball is an intriguing player: Mike Sharavjamts.

He's Mongolian and his father was a Harlem Globetrotter. A 6'8" point forward who played his freshman year at Dayton, entered the portal, declared for and then withdrew from the NBA draft. He averaged 6 points and 3 assists in 23 minutes per game for Dayton.

The Sports Illustrated draft scouting report says that "he can play as a jumbo point guard who is not just able to create for teammates, but also to space the floor with tremendous consistency, being a threat from beyond the 3-point line.... Sharavjamts possesses a vast passing repertoire. He does all the simple things expected of a point forward, such as running the point in transition and making the right plays on drives with effective drive-and-kick passes, but also adds an advanced level of passing which is rare for a player of his size."

Sharavjamts named a top 5 of Indiana, Memphis, Nebraska, Pittsburgh and San Francisco but we know how there's room for new developments.

Would Sharavjamts make us better next year over someone who's on the roster now? Do his skills translate to initiating offense in the Big Ten? How valuable are his 3 years of eligibility? Does Geoff Alexander have contacts in Mongolia?

Let’s assume you meant we haven’t brought in good guards, since Dee, Deron, and Luther were still here after Self. In that case, we’ve only had seven guards make All Big Ten teams in that time. Name calling isn’t nice, so I’ll just wish you a lovely evening, good sir.

I am not a big fan of Reeves. Last year when we were looking at him coming out of isu, didn't someone do a breakdown that he is one of the worst defenders in the valley?

Is this really a thing? 🐯
