Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

Yeah, I wasn’t trying to suggest I think he’s ready. My only point is he’s the one guy on the roster who fits the profile of what we need — a guard with a handle who has the potential to break down defenses, get to the paint, create shots, run PnRs. Do I think he gets there this year? Likely no. But if we want to find a way to work on our biggest weakness, he might be our best shot, slim as that shot may be. Which is why I think you keep giving him chances to prove himself; hopefully it accelerates his growth, and worst case scenario, he/his family are happy he’s not riding the bench and we have less chance he transfers.
I mean Shannon can absolutely run pick and rolls we just never seen to ever actually run pick and rolls.

They should have been constantly running 2 man game pick and rolls last years with Shannon and Mayer and probably should be doing the same this year with Shannon and Domask(Goode would also be ideal for pick and pops).

Morez was in the house and they were able to put him on the scoreboard as an Illinois commit. Got an almost standing ovation.
Until he makes a freshman mistake , then the Illini faithful that think they know better will eat him alive.

Sorry if this is a little harsh but after some of the comments I have seen about last nights loss I am a bit soured on some arm chair coaches

I don’t want to read to much into an early season loss to a top 5 team but it sure feels like wash, rinse and repeat from last year.

Respectfully disagree. I think we have PTSD from last year's team that was inconsistent all season long and never really got in a groove.

This team will be much easier for BU to coach up, find the right buttons to push, and we have a much better chance of turning into a well oiled machine. Unfortunately, BU made it much tougher to do by not getting a PG... but I still believe he can get it done.

Turnovers in the final 10 minutes killed us. Credit to Marquette, they’re legit. Love having a game like this in November. It’ll pay dividends later in the season.
That's the identity of every Underwood team. That said I think we will be pretty good this year.

Last year ... Between Skyy and Mayer ... Coleman kind of got a pass from me but it is year 4 ... He is not mature ... He never takes responsibility ... He chucks stupid shots ... Tries to hit home runs instead of singles ...

I want to see more Hansberry going forward and less Hawkins if he continues to play like this ...
I agree, Lowest basketball IQ I've seen in a long time, and from such a physical talent. He consistently holds on to the ball when a simple rotation to the weak side will open something up for his team mates. Both Shannon and Coleman got those turnovers by forcing what wasn't there, it's like they don't trust their team. I would like to see Coleman put on the bench and replaced with Hansberry every time he screws up. I like what I've seen from Hansberry so far, and with more tick hopefully he can shake some of his freshman jitters.

Let me introduce you to a kid by the name of Andre Curbelo ...
I go way, way back but will never forget Andy Kaufmann -- and crowd definitely turned on him. Would get those mock cheers whenever he would pass up a shot whenever it looked like he was about to go 1 on 3 again.

I err on the side of the glass half full fan, so Andy's shot to beat Iowa will always erase anything else he ever did wrong.

We made 10 2 pt shots the entire game.
Right, in an absolute sense, that is sad 2pt shooting, since it was 10 for 25 or 40% on 2s.
But Marquette was actually worse at 10 for 27 or 37% on 2s, so, relative to our opponent, bad shooting on 2s was not the reason we lost this game by 7 pts.

Instead, you have to look at the 15 TOs (vs 8 for Marquette). Since CH and TSJ had 10 of the 15 TOs, they are your main culprits. TSJ was wildly going to the basket, so that style comes with some TOs automatically, especially when the refs don't call a lot of fouls. With CH it's harder rationalize. Many bigs wouldn't be out on the perimeter as much as CH is. Coleman needs to stick to the safe passes and be more aware of defenders, like when Kolek stripped him. That stuff (TOs induced by Marquette's good defense) is what lost us this game.

Bad turnovers
Bad shot selection
Both things that can be brought on with nerves and can be cleaned up. I'm not worried about those.

What I noticed Marquette do that we certainly can learn from... getting quality chances early in the shot clock.
We tend to just pass the ball past the 3 pt line way too much. Marquette was getting to the basket quick and their adjustments didn't end up in rushed shots like ours typically do
Marquettes defense pushed us out around the 3 pt arch, and much of our offense started 20-25 ft from the basket. We didn't get many good looks in the paint. Our defense was too passive and let Marquettes offense penetrate into the lane too easily that resulted in too many easy buckets....our defense will have to be better to win against this type of opponent and we need to figure out how to get the ball into the paint more frequently resulting in easier buckets and this should help open up better looks from the arch as well.....also Marquette is good

I’m not convinced that Hawkins is a good 3 point shooter.
Not fair. Let me check his official stats on 3s this season... 1 for 7 for 14%. Whoops, totally fair.

For the record, CH did shoot 28% on 3s last season, so partly that is bad luck or a failed attempt to change his low-arch technique. He also shot a lot better in the KU game, but that didn't count officially.

Alright, I have had a night to sleep on the loss. While this is not in ANY way some comprehensive list, here are some things off the top of my head. Let's keep in mind that we were down 68-63 before Marquette;s last round of free throws.

Negative
1. We shot 33% from three, or 11 for 33. I distinctly remember Guerrier and Hawkins each missing two wide open three pointers. If two of those four that I recall go in, we shoot 13 for 33 from three point land, good for 39%. And we are winning in the final minute. I know posters get annoyed that we shoot so many three pointers when we are "not good at them," but the fact is we SHOULD be making more of these! Guerrier was 0 for 2, and both were wide open. Hawkins was 1 for 5, many of them wide open. DGL was 0 for 3. Our issue last year was jacking up BAD three point attempts ... I am hopeful that we can correct missing GOOD three point attempts.

2. We actually outrebounded them 40 to 38. We had 12 offensive to their 10, and both teams had 28 defensive rebounds. So, it is pretty clear that our issue was FINISHING at the basket ... and that is way more evident when you see we were 10 for 27 (37%) from two ... that is bad. We all can probably remember multiple layups and put backs that rolled of the rim, and we NEED those to go in to beat a top 5 team.

3. This one isn't new ... 15 turnovers to Marquette's 8. HAVE to change that, but I have some hope we can get that under control as the season progresses. This IS only game three...

Positive
1. 85% from the free throw line was great to see! It shows we can do it, and it's a mental thing (at least IMO). We might not shoot it that well every night, but by golly you CANNOT make 50% of your free throws come March. That was a nice improvement.

2. We had SEVEN blocks to Marquette's ZERO. I sincerely hope we can continue to figure out how to use our great mixture of size/length and speed/athleticism to improve. This team has the pieces, we just need to clean things up.

3. In contrast to what I said yesterday, I actually like our upcoming games. Three games in Champaign that we SHOULD win to get to 5-1. Then a road test at the RAC vs. an underwhelming Rutgers team ... it might be a nice opportunity to exorcise some demons we have had in that building vs. a team we should beat. Then if we are 6-1 and feeling confident, we go give it our all vs. FAU in New York and Tennessee in Knoxville!

We need to get DGL going, we miss his speed and quickness. Really missed Sincere in this one. Nobody could slow down Kolek. Much improved shooting and I really like the improvement by Shannon on the 3 ball. Should be a fun year. Marquette is a top 5 team for real.

Let me introduce you to a kid by the name of Andre Curbelo ...
I'm sure the behind the scenes stuff has a lot to do for your perspective, but really, Curbelo was only healthy his freshman year, and while yes, he would make poor decisions, that's generally what freshmen do. I can get fans being frustrated by his sophomore season, but he also suffered multiple concussions in the first few weeks of the season that greatly affected his play (yes, along with other reasons). For me, Curbelo wasn’t as frustrating as just a sad case, as I think frustrating play should almost exclusively be used for non-freshmen, because of course. Would've been interesting to see how Curbelo would have progressed if he would have remained healthy.

I would prefer Hawk to play to his strengths and take open shots and not go one on one. He us a career 42 percent shooter and 27 percent from 3. If he plays great D and makes quality passes and takes open shots then thats what I want from him. He is not a high percentage back to the basket scorer. He just isn't. Domask is our #2 and we need Ty and Hawk to play to their strengths and not force things. Quincy, Domask. and Goode didn't play perfect but they played well and didn't force things. If we do that as a team we will be fine. Quincy was 0 for 3 and DGL was too but only maybe 1 shot from DGL was a bad shot. Ty didn't take any bad shots he never does..missing a shot is one thing but taking a bad shot or dumb pass is another. Its clear who does that most often
These are good comments, especially on the reality of what CH can be for IL against top-10 competition. He honestly isn't going to incredible in these very tough games. KU was probably the best he can play realistically. We can't rely on him as our number two scorer in these games. He CAN try to limit his TOs and avoid tough/long 3s. His drives and jump hooks are good 2s for him, but he was limited by good defenders in this game. On D, he needs to stay in front and not let guys get past him for layups. We need CH, so we have to encourage him to keep improving.

No moral victories.

In saying that, we looked really good for the most part. Some really dumb mistakes and TSJ/Coleman did not have their best games.

Overall, this team is good enough to be a top 10 team this year. Some things to clean up for sure though
I would agree with your analysis.. However after attending virtually every home game since Brad became coach. I sit in my perch from above wondering what in the hell is our offensive goal? I will admit I am not a BB coach and the xs and os are not my strength, but that being said i have seen rec teams run better plays at the Disc in Decatur. Someone with some true BB knowledge feel free to explain to me what I am missing besides some dribbling hand it to TSJ and hope he can shoot a 3 drive or find a man parked out on the 3 pt line that feels like chucking up a 3.

This team has no concept on how to clear out the lane and let Dain,CoHawk or TSJ play one on one.. the post is always clogged... One only need to watch 2-3 minutes of Marquette to see how you do it.. Is it that hard to pull your man away from the basket? Maybe we need to see more clearing and more Dain on the floor.

Overall I was happy with overall play last night but left frustrated by our continued lack of an offensive game plan.

I feel like Ty is getting closer.

No one is gonna out work that kid … Ty will only continue to get better … And I agree - he’s getting closer …

But in order to beat a team like Marquette … Ty has to be your 4th guy … TJ, Domask, and it just feels like we expected that 3rd guy to be Coleman and he’s just not it … We really are missing an elite guard who can just take someone off the bounce and go get one IMO … And while Ty is working on that … He’s not there yet …

Elite guard play … Marquette has about 4-5 guards that would start for us …

The biggest issue that I saw on both ends of the floor is that Marquette was able to get dribble penetration which required help defense and they made smart passes to high percentage shots / dunks (48% from 2).

We were not able to really get any dribble penetration, were forced to shoot a ton of 3's (same problem different year) or low percentage shots (37% from 2).

Hawkins just does not have the killer instinct or consistency to be that go-to scorer. And it's maddening since he clearly has all the tools.

Get Ty going and I think that helps a lot. He already just swallows up rebounds. Hell be a double double machine before long. Hopefully by mid-season?
