With some of their comments I wondered if they even had a monitor in the booth with them.
The false start was a killer. Going into the locker room with 17 points at halftime? Would have been sweet. I don’t want to know who that was. That really cost us the ballgame.
My point is, Illinois did not lose becasue of the defensive strategy and play. We lost because of the offense.
Illinois Loyalty says “these are your sons…fighting for you.” Even though it was written in 1907, I still thought it applied today.

Oof, been singing it wrong for almost 60 years. Well, still it’s your sons (and daughters, but not in football) fighting for you. Really remarkable to have a reference to daughters in a song written in 1907.
I don't think we can assume a dead ball penalty would have played out the same way. The defense could have reacted to a whistle or the movement of an official.
By the way, did you notice that MSU employed the Michigan State strategy on defense? As soon as we got rolling on offense suddenly one of their players had a mysterious injury, lying on the field for five minutes as their defense regrouped and our momentum cooled? This happened three or four times and I predicted the last two to the guy seated next to me.
Don’t know what you can do about it other than hustle them off the field quicker, but health is paramount so you don’t want to make a real injury worse.
I guess all the MSUs cheat alike!

It was a hard fought game. Our offense struggled some. I expected it to. Love played solid but currently there is a large gap between one of the nations top rushers and our other backs. Also when considering not having our best two future NFL pass defenders and top RB Chase Brown.
I was actually very encouraged how our your defenders played that very good and experienced pass offense. I thought we may struggle more without those three studs and down a lineman who's back up had some critical penalties. The team played very well all things considered. After today my glass is half full and there is a lot to be excited about our future!

Eh… I don’t know… Michigan State’s was obvious and intentional. There were at least a couple of those injuries yesterday where the players had struggles standing and walking.
For all the vaunted “SEC speed”, they were not use to getting hit the way our offense and defense hits.

Based on their reactions and movement, I don't think they were intentionally trying to slow momentum, I think it was more of a product to their guys getting absolutely rocked by our guys. Almost every time when they showed one of their players slow to get up it was directly due to a crushing hit by one of our players. Some of the times this happen it did suck as it seemed to stall our momentum, but I think that was just coincidental timing. It was pretty clear the Miss St. players hadn't been hit this hard all season. Our game against MSU it was blatantly obvious they were stalling for time after every single play. Much different story in my opinion.
Really, I think a sort of "knockdown" rule coming into effect would mitigate some of this gamesmanship. Maybe something like a player slow to get up/needing an injury timeout twice in a game needs to sit out for a quarter as they get checked out. If they are slow to get up a third time, they need to sit the rest of the game to avoid major injury. Something of that sort.

You're so right! 23 yds. rushing or whatever it was will not cut it.
This is actually the culture of Miss State football. They did the same crap in a prior bowl game.

That isn't on us. Our guy made a football play to keep the MSU player from blocking down field. The kid from MSU took exception and started a fight

Totally unnecessary hit by our player. The flag was on us for an illegal crackback block.
They’d be rock stars in BIG.
That score epitomized the season, great defensive effort followed by an uneven offensive effort. Hopefully the next QB can be more of a playmaker than manager. This season should bolster their recruiting efforts as they've shown they're not the complete wasteland program of recent memory.
Or them, since it was 6 MSU to 1 of us to start it
Edit: After re-watching the beginning, agree, unnecessary hit by our player. Have seen many of those unnecessary penalties this year, but fewer than previous years

This is a great summary, thanks. I've been trying to figure out how to express similar thoughts, without coming across as completely negative, and you did a fine job of that. I agree that it's reasonable to think our odds of winning the game were far better with our three stars on the field. Both because all three are great players, but also because they played the majority of available minutes all season long. As a fan, it just stinks. Having your stars sit out the most visible game of the season is not good for the sport or the team. But as you and others have said, it's totally understandable from the players' standpoint. So the fault is with the "system," and it's up to each fan to decide how they react to it.
In my case, I certainly won't be traveling to any bowl games when our star players sit out the game. And I might skip watching the games from home as well. I'm competitive by nature, as are many/most sports fans, and I don't enjoy losing. Losing when we could have won with our season-long starters in the game is just not fun at all.
So, great season. Awesome play by the young secondary in the bowl game; those guys are going to be very good.
This could have been a very different game if our players hadn't opted out (quit) !
Yes this has been one hell of a season and more than i expected, I know some will be pissed
about the first sentence, Im not an NFL fan, so if there success isn't on this site i Will never know, nor will
I follow or keep up. I wish there was some type of accountability for players that opt out on their brothers, so much for FAMILLY , I am a season ticket holder since 2005 and a I Fund donor and missed only 3 games since then. I drive 247 miles one way (3 hrs 40 min) no matter the outcome , rain, sleet or snow I go
the Purdue game this year tested my wife's commitment to me and the game this year, (both ended up sick and got covid) . I'm a shift worker (12 hr) and some time I get off work and head to game, I show up, I'm just a fan but their brothers they left on the field, some of them will never go
to the next level, but they were a big part of their success and they left them hanging. I hope they opt out of senior bowl and
other events as well.
