And the 5th foul on our All-American?
Definitely a bad call. Agreed. The lack of a call of Frazier was also brutal. There were definitely misses by the refs. Can't control that.

However, it doesn't take away from the overall point. We shot 11 of 17 and missed multiple front ends of one and ones. Those are things our guys can control. They didn't convert on the opportunities.

Why has Hawkins at the 5 not been considered more/earlier? Omar is good for a couple quick fouls and BVV is what he is at this point.
That's a good question that I've been asking myself. It's probably because Hawkins play has been subpar for the past month. Games like tonight should give BU the confidence to insert him at the 5. You have to go with your best players from here on out.

Had Kofi inherited Garza's halo from last year, he'd average 30 points a game. I think that's what's most frustrating to me, we finally have that type of dominant player and he rarely gets the benefit of the doubt.

It's unreal how much abuse he takes every game with so few calls. Maybe he needs to commit one hard offensive foul early in a game to send a message. Maybe guys would back off if they knew he wasn't going to take it anymore.

Per Bruce's usual, the game was lost coming out of the halftime locker room. I would enjoy a coach more that recognizes in game trends. Like Plummer is hot. Kofi is getting hammered and can't finish. Trent is a mess. Pressing when the team isn't giving max effort helps to engage all. 94 feet of hell. Rotate fresh bodies. No one cares if Payne and Goode and other bench types pick up fouls as long as they are hustling and being disruptive. Coached correctly, most of these close losses are winnable. Long time board observer. 40 year fan. Not probably as positive as a lot of you. Sorry. Love the Illini. Just see we can be better. PS practice free throws please.
I'll try to find the tweet, but theres an analytics guy that shows change in efficiency 2nd half vs first for all p5 teams charted out, and Illinois is among the best....

Also, I love Hawk. He's gonna be a good one. He has quite literally everything you want in a player, especially the heart. His fight dragged our lifeless corpse out of the grave and got everyone back into the game.
Hawkins coming out party tonight. Really believe he gained some swagger back tonight. Thought he was terrific

The officiating was terrible again. Unfortunately, that is the norm. Fact it this team spends a lot time sleepwalking. It’s hard to envision them winning their last six games. There it is. Prove me wrong Illini.

We had ALL the momentum. At home. Playing for the tie makes 100% sense.
Maybe, but Kofi and CH were out of the game. I think OT would have been a problem with matchups and rebounding. Shoot the three and take your chances. It’s frustrating to think about how many games over the last several years featuring last possessions to win have ended up with no shot at all. I agree with others on the board who said Trent likely gets the call if he throws up a wild shot vs. passing. Still, I have this weird feeling that this game is going to be a net positive going forward.

Coleman will have his up-and-down moments like all young players, sure, but he is a willing and effective passer and has been bringing great effort and making all the hustle plays that may not be reflected the stat sheet recently.

Yeah, I mean, any shot is better than no shot too.

Dig deeper into those numbers. OSU made what, 13 in a row at one point? They maximized their opportunities. We were 11 of 17 and how many front ends did we miss? Those front end misses are the hidden points and missed opportunities for a second shot. That's on the players. The BU and DMW techs added four more shots.

Illinois had 6 more fouls called on them. For a team that jacked up 25 threes(not going to get fouled doing that), this discrepancy isn't that bad.

That said, Frazier was clearly fouled at the end.
The complaint is Kofi had 15 shots was getting hacked and didn’t shoot hardly any free throws. It’s a reoccurring theme. We should be getting a lot more foul calls with Kofi.

All we have to figure out is sustained energy. Eliminate the 10-15 min stretches of softness and this is absolutely a Final Four caliber squad.

Get Curbelo back in rhythm off the bench with CoHawk and Goode and not lose any momentum. This team will be tough to beat.

Kofi was bound to have at least one or two bad games...especially aided by officiating. The no calls against him have to take a mental toll on him. Just re-watched some of it......it's really, really bad.

I'm almost ready for Payne to just sit down unless there is an injury or we are in serious foul trouble and I'm not talking about just Kofi. He just brings very little to the table. His offensive game outside of coach the lob is pretty much non-existent, he takes too many gambles to block every shot, and he usual has at least one boneheaded foul or turnover when he is in. I would like to see more Hawkins at the 5 when Kofi is out.
You are onto something. Stick Hawkins out there and suddenly, the athletic 4 (or 5) don’t look so scary. Payne has a lot of work to do. He’s still very very raw.

I AM SICK OF WATCHING Kofi get his arms brutalized but no call.

THEN, that lame !!! last foul on Kofi? GTFOH!

SICK! Just disgusting.
I can guarantee you that wouldn’t happen if you had three more physical players on the court at the same time because those players would help draw the defenders away from Kofi. That’s why I’m looking forward to seeing Rodgers and Dainja play next year and if they add a strong forward or power forward such as Roddy than that will be a much more physical team to face. Teams will have a hard time guarding that. In the meantime, they should just put Hawkins out there at the same time with Kofi and have Frazier and Plummer as the guards with Grandison as the shooting forward until Melendez comes back. DMFW just isn’t it, this year. His lack of focus isn’t there this year.
