Purdue 83, Illinois 78 Postgame

Hansbrough said on field of 68 that Illinois is a fringe tournament team 😂🤡 "and then a corn fell". it's called an acorn Tyler.

I mean… easily could also be called a hook and hold on Luke. He literally has Edey’s arm with both hands. Yes there is a lot of contact there, but that amount of contact goes uncalled quite often in the lane.

Huh?
This is a foul on Luke?
Edey is clamping down on his head and you want to call Luke for defending himself.

At the very least we fought. We have winners on this team. Where I see a difference between us and Purdue is with TSJ we can play all kinds of different styles. Purdue definitely has gotten a little more versatile, but are less dimensional for us. We can keep getting better and better, when you could argue Purdue is already pretty close to their peak.

Lost on the road by 5 without our best player and Ty playing about as bad as he could play. Like mentioned already, don’t think most teams we play will be able to play Ty like Purdue did, especially if/when TSJ comes back.

Winning this one was going to be just about impossible given all the circumstances and we gave them a heck of a fight.

Yeah, the team that’s 7 in KenPom, 8 in T-Rank, 7 in NET, who just lost on the road at #1 by 5 without their All-American who will likely be back by the end of the season, is a fringe tourney team. Good take.

I have to believe Brad goes to the locker room feeling better about this game than Painter does. Purdue is absolutely ELITE at home, and we beat them by 11 after their initial run where we were sleep-walking.
Painter has to feel pretty good after beating us. He has no doubt that they just beat a great team, probably the toughest they will face all year.

Advanced stats look at opponent adjusted efficiency, actual scoring margin vs predicted scoring margin, etc. The polls largely look at wins and losses. We likely won’t drop much since we played tough @ #1 Purdue, but depending on how the rest of the games play out over the weekend, we likely drop 2-3 spots.

Let‘s aim get back in and have another top 10 matchup in a few months.
You called the Purdue game plan for Ty in the pre-game. Probably not the win you were looking for, but nevertheless.

Yep, after I wrote that, I heard the Sleepers guys talk about it as well and they thought Ty might not be effective in this game for that very reason.

Rodgers seems like he has done all Brad has asked of him, and I truly think he is great for us. That said, against Edey and Purdue, he just isn't it. If we have TSJ in to the point we can leave Ty out most of the game, I think we take this one.

Looking forward to drunkely committing to pay $150+ for tickets on a Tuesday for the rematch in Champaign

Man, I don't know. Jones has a box out in place. It would be stupid dangerous, but what else is stopping players from just jumping in this situation and getting a foul everytime? Or is that just an indication of an "out of control" box out?

The beloved played their butts off tonight , even when the cards were stacked against them and the odds were low that they could even make it respectable at numerous times in the game.....but they didn't quit.....And I won't quit either.....if you want to quit , then go ahead ....we won't miss you ..............not one little bit......

JMHO...................................
Pru this sums up my feelings exactly... Why i typically never go to the game threads anymore.

Ty had a bad game, but I think people are dead wrong who think he's unplayable in the rematch. The game plan simply has to shift to where if Edey is deep sagging off of him, he shouldn't quickly give up the ball to someone on the perimeter. Instead, he needs to drive into him and find the cutter or kick. By immediately giving the ball up, Ty is taking himself out of the game making it 4 on 5. If he starts taking it into Edey looking to distribute, he's instead effectively taking Edey out of the game. Ty had a bad game but he also didn't have the correct mindset in this one. He'll be fine and improve from this. Dain on the other hand... Oof...
I agree, and Ty could beat that game plan by just making 1 or 2 mid range jumpers or drive and kick.

I'm not sure I buy all of the +/- there. Loyer didn't look to have much impact on the game to me.

Domask at -5? Well, yeah. He played all 40 minutes.

It just doesn't tell the story all the time.
Agree - that graphic should be used to wipe one's backside after a bout of Tex-Mex dominant erupt and flushed. The most dominant players in the game showing a negative +/-?

I had a feeling this would be a tough one for Ty. I feel like I saw some clips of him knocking down some threes over the summer. I think he should have taken one. He hits one early and their defensive game plan goes out the window.

I didn’t expect a win, but I am impressed with this team. Lots of fight and they play together. Down big and they came back twice. Just didn’t have quite enough. Going to be a fun season.
Domask is something else. He probably tried to do too much at the end, but he kept us in the game and is better defensively than I expected. Just a really smart player, as advertised. QG also better than I expected.

That's exactly what it is.. Just because you are boxing out does not give you the right to keep forcing contact backing up and up and up. The player has the right to go for the ball and in this case the guy boxing out did not even attempt to go for the ball and created a dangerous situation by simply backing up with no regards for what the player behind him was doing.

He just stayed low and kept backing up undercutting QG. QC goes straight up for the ball to get the rebound and the defender doesn't even try to make a play on the ball.

Horrible start buried us and had the Illini fighting an uphill battle all night. The Illini did what they needed to do: Get Edey in foul trouble, hold Smith and Loyer down but they let Renn and Jones go off on them and had no answer. They let Boilers get 2nd chance 3's all night. Still had a shot at pulling it out at the end except missed 2 free throws and Hawkins big travelling call with around 2 minutes to go. That all said I am proud of this teams fight. They could have called in the dogs, put their tail between their legs and went home but they just continued to battle. I believe the rematch in Champaign will be different with the Illini rolling. Now just take down MSU and Maryland and they are in the hunt!

Funny how this looked like a deep team and now we're reduced to 6 core players in the rotation. Need to figure out what we're going to do whenever Domask or Coleman has to sit.
Agreed, but I think this was just feeding off the last two games. Keep that connected group on the floor and see if we have a chance at upsetting Purdue.

After MSU our schedule gets pretty brutal. Games every 3 or 4 days. Will likely need a larger rotation then to keep legs somewhat fresh.
