Agreed. Kofi absolutely has to improve his reaction to this type of game.

That said....again I really hate sounding like that ref complaining fan....but Kofi was punished for his physicality...while Edey was rewarded. Some of that is absolutely on him...but not all of it.

Kofi out with his 4th fouls with 17+ remaining in the second.

We were still the better team in the second half. Without Kofi. Silver lining.

Curbelo is not just back.....he's baaaaaack!

I think some of that is on the fact that, for once, Kofi had to go against a guy that is considerably taller than him. You can be a little more physical without looking so physical when you have 4 inches on the other guy. You can also get away with more over the back stuff without obviously mauling the guy. Kofi has to find a way to play around that, as I have a feeling there's a good chance it's us against Purdue in the BTT championship.

Kind of get a kick out of all the complaining on ref calls. I would bet my life that none of those posts come from anyone who has ever refereed a B1G game between two teams of this ilk. Of course, there never has been a game like this between two teams with this much size, speed, and quickness. It is extremely difficult.

I will say this, you will never see a game where every call is correct, and likely, 99% of us will never understand what the correct calls are. I sure don't, and I have been played organized hoops for 35 years, been trained in correct officiating, and even called a few games. I had a friend who was an official and called games in the MVC and B1G for decades. First of all, they all take pride in making the correct call. Secondly, some calls have to be interpreted by what is seen and they can NEVER be seen from all angles by anyone. Finally, timing is critical. They know they miss things....and they know they are affected by crowd noise and momentum. Bottom line, they always make calls in real time by what they see. Replay has helped them get things right in some cases, but will not, at this time, and maybe never, allow that in real time. The only problem I ever have with officials are those who like the spotlight....and those are less and less prevalent as review and renew committees are weeding them out. It is a thankless job, but overall, is filled by a pretty admirable bunch of people.

Yeah, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night...so.....

You all whine about foul discrepancy, but when your offense is 3-point shooting you’re not gonna draw fouls. We didn’t do anything to draw fouls apart from kofi.

This loss isn’t on refs
You must not have been watching us slashing. Curbelo had 20 points, none of which were from 3s. I agree this loss isn't on the refs, but I'd argue they certainly were a contributing factor.

3. Kofi needs to quickly forget this one. He, more than anyone, should have 2/10 in Mackey on his bulletin board. He was pushed around today.
Wait. He needs to quickly forget this game or remember it for revenge on 2/10? LOL

I get what you’re saying and agree with the spirit of your post. Typically, Kofi goes on a tear after bad games. He’s proud so remembering bad performances is good for him not bad. It motivates him to kill basketball rims.

You realize our offense was forced to that when Kofi went to the bench with 4 fouls and 17 minutes left in the second half....right?
And somehow the refs should be compelled to call fouls on our three point shots as a result? Lmao.

You sound like that ref complaining fan…

I liked that refs were letting them play in the 1st part of game.

after stef swung at payne and payne got a flagrant (stef got nada),....that's when the rails went off for the refs I thought....

Curbelo avoids contact by default. He’s not drawing fouls. Which one of was wasn’t watching?

Not in any way trying to take credit away from Purdue. They hit their shots. Painter is the "best" coach in the B1G (gun to my head sorry BU)....and those set plays he ran in 2 OT were the nails in our........ black and white striped coffin. Sorry...I can't stop.

besides trent/grandy/plummer driving

Fouls arent only on shooters.

Damonte got hip checked out of bounds with no call, plummer got hip checked on the game tying bucket.

We got called for BS such as damonte standing straight up while ivey fades away from him after initiating contact. I dont think anyone is saying we should have the exact same amount, just call the ones they missed.

Also purdue only shot 6 more 2 pointers than us

I gotta say, as tough as it was to get so close to what would have been a exclamation point win, and be denied, I can't help but feel good overall. Curbelo hasn't played competitive basketball in weeks, and he looked so good out there. Better than he did before his injury. I'm feeling optimistic, and I would hardly describe myself as one of the more optimistic, kool-aid drinking fans on here.

Wow, what an epic game. That was 2 top 10 teams battling it out. Wish we could have pulled it out, but take away our AA for 2/3 of the game and we're fortunate it went to 2OT. Purdue is legit and I credit them for hitting big shots on the road.
And Kofi was out for 20+ minutes in the 2nd half.

I'm not a big fan of Painter despite his coaching chops, but was nice to hear the props he gave Trent in the postgame.

It's way too easy to blame the refs. While some very big calls went against Illinois, there are still a LOT of things that occurred that really determined the outcome, some of which we don't want to hear.

Up 24-20, Purdue missed a shot, Illinois couldn't secure the rebound(again) and it led to the uncontested three.

That was immediately followed by the Payne flagrant.

Which was the start to a 17-0 run. That should NEVER happen in a game. A 7 minute scoring drought should never, ever happen.

Kofi(sigh). I love the guy. However, he can't play with bigs of his size, bigs who are long and athletic or bigs that can stretch the floor. He's a liability. He's dominant against smaller players who can't physically match up with him. There is no NBA future for Kofi, which is why he isn't high on many(if any) draft boards. They try force feeding him and it's an automatic turnover or a bad shot, which serves as a turnover. All of that is ok, provided they adjust their game plan accordingly. I have a total mancrush on BU too, but he does not have "the best big man in the country."

Plummer has to be more aware defensively.

The good news is that with Curbelo back, this team is not so one dimensional. Their reliance on three's is reduced by his ability to drive, get to the rack and finish. They don't have another guy on the roster who can do that.

There's a LOT of good that can be taken from this game. Nothing good comes from blaming the referees. If Illinois is better at the end of the first half, they win comfortably, regardless of calls.

Going forward, with Andre quickly getting back in the flow of the game and distributing the ball while breaking down defenses, and BBV coming off the bench with hustle and toughness to spell Kofi, we will continue to make strides, hopefully win the conference, and be extremely dangerous in March. Right now, the Illini and Purdue are the best teams in the Big Ten, with MSU, Wisky, and OSU right behind. Brad and staff have instilled toughness and fight in these young men, who are living up to the name Fighting Illini. Makes long time fans proud.

Great game no matter what. Unfortunate for the flagrant. I thought then I hope one point doesn’t affect the game. We would have won in regulation.

His saying "You've some guys who will half !!! doing what the coach tells them, I've got a couple of them..." Hilarious
