Because you're an Illini . . .
Have u seen how many fans they get in their stadium. It is not like UCLA was the dominant PAC-10 team. They have had good teams but they are not USC Oregon. Their last conference championship was 1998. Illinois is 2-2 in bowl games against them and they have been to one more bowl game than us since 2015

I have no idea if he's any good after this year or next, but hes made lemonade out of lemons this year
He walked into a crap storm
If I’m him, I see if I can have one more good year with Fitz’s players and my portal guys, and then see if I can move on to a better job. It’s probably too early, but that’s what I’d be trying.

what he’s done is darn near miraculous

I don't care if I'm the only one but I'll gladly be the captain of the fire Henry train. It won't happen, I know, but there is no way in hell you can blame the performance of these DBs on "well see we lost so much to the draft...". Outside of the front 4ish this defense is indefensible. They can not get a single stop in a high leverage situation (The Indiana OT stop was all the D Line, and that was only after the secondary S*** the bed and let it get to OT in the first place).

it won’t be an up & comer

it’ll be a guy looking to re-write his current end of career coaching history

Yeah the team needs to lose a lot to the draft every year without the major drop off in talent. That's how a decent power 5 program should operate

Both coordinators are BBs BFFs so I don’t expect much to change in the off-season, but if winning was what mattered most both would be replaced for the salaries involved. Both our OC and DC belong at the G5 level.

Think of it this way - are any P2 programs trying to poach them? P5? If they were let go would they end up at a P2? P5? Or a G5 school?

Edit: at current positions - I could see A Henry being hired as a positional assistant at the P5 level.

How about Antonio Fenelus. What role does he play in this demise?

It wouldn’t have. Bret’s not gonna fire a coordinator mid season especially not Henry who he is extremely close with
The other point is- Brett gave Henry the job knowing it was a big step up for him (he wouldn’t have gotten any other P5 job as DC this year) with the idea of letting him grow into the role which invariably will come with some bumps and learning experiences. So if that was his decision last offseason he was doing it with a multiyear horizon in mind.

It’s not like he hired an experienced DC that hasn’t been up to snuff so you move on after a year. He made the decision to let Henry grow into the role when he hired him, so he’s going to let him do that

and he hired JL to be his “analyst & advisor “ so that Henry has a little more guidance than Walters had the previous two years

It's Henry's first year as coordinator; you have to give him some opportunity to grow into the role. It was a calculated risk and it's too soon to say it isn't going to work. Walter was considered a failure at Mizzou, look where he is now

We also lost an NFL caliber defensive backfield and thrust a bunch of new guys into new roles. Plus Bailey got hurt, then Randolph for part of the season, and it's taken time for the new guys to gel. Need to at least give him another season to prove he has the chops and that he can learn from mistakes.
