Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

Coleman shooting 3's are equal to turnovers. Supposedly coaches keep saying shoot it cohawk.
Ty Rodgers should have been on Kolek. Not Luke and Domask.
TSjr. did a great job all night on Cam!
Let's get better and fo beat Tennessee a d FAU soon. Plenty of chances at quality wins coming up.
They rotated everyone on him. TJ was on him a lot too. Goode was fine on him. Refs bailed Kolek out a couple times. We also switched pretty much everything all night.

Also for all the Buck would have slowed him down….Kolek would have played bully ball with Buck.

Big picture this game is at least net neutral. From a fan perspective we proved in real action we can hang with the big boys. From a season w/l perspective, this loss causes a minimal amount of pain.

Not sure if anyone feels the same, but what's up with the Orange Krush? Maybe it seemed louder in person but it didn't come off that way on the tv screen. Compared to Purdue's student section, the Orange Krush has a long way to go to make the difference that their predecessors made. You're playing a top 5 team in the country and you stand silently when Marquette has a 5-8 pt lead? Make some noise, be the 6th man, be the intimidating and hostile presence that we know the Orange Krush can be. I was a bit disappointed and it speaks to a group that maybe isn't as basketball intense as their predecessors from 20 yrs ago
For a game against a Top 5 team that was a tight game throughout, I'll just say it, I thought the crowd energy was fairly abysmal. There were brief moments where it got loud but then it went to dead silent. We used to be the House of 'Paign. This was more like the House of Contemplative Thought. As someone who remembers very well how rabid our crowds could get, this game felt like an 11am Saturday morning snow game against PSU. I also don't know why during the past 2 games someone in the crowd is screaming during our free throw attempts. Maybe it has been a random opposing fan each time, but it's strange.

While we've definitely all talked about the decline in volume in Assembly Hall over the past decade, this was a pretty big fall off from even that. It's hard to believe to be honest. Did last season have that much of an effect?

It was disappointing to see some of the same issues as last year with the 3pt shooting and turnovers. Basically this looks like the same team as last year and I expect the same results. Damask and Goode are nice offensive additions, but it just doesn't look any different from last year to me. Not an entirely bad thing. At least we are looking at a team capable of getting to the tournament.

There's been such a huge decline in fan engagement that really upsets me a lot. Not only do people not make noise, most people don't stand for the 3-in-1 or sing the Alma Mater (I even saw Orange Krush members sitting on their phone during it this past game), people barely respond to the ILL-INI cheer, don't stand for the running of the flags, and basically any other traditions designed to build engagement. Its really disheartening to see and seems like it takes something really special to break people out of their funk.

Last night I was briefly on a livestream of the game. There were some interesting takes to say the least. Lol.

1.) It was implied/stated we needed the instant offense of Matt Mayer & Jaden Epps…then went on to say he didn’t miss those players? (This person DID mention that they were both a mixed bag in so many words.)

2.) The Brad…can’t X & O-thing reared it’s ugly head again…followed closely by the-when/if we still had Stephen Gentry it was/would be a big sunny school picnic with moonpies up on big rock candy mountain.

(On the list of things I tire of hearing about…that one is pretty high up.)

I’m a younger fan so i never saw the old days. I thought the crowd got pretty rowdy last night. I thought Marquette did a great job answering every time the crowd got loud.

We may be fine but it will be because of TSJ n Domask. I have seen very little to be encouraged about from Hawkins. As many turnovers and points tonight and averaging less than 5 points a game and just not off to a good start. He is a not a good shooter, just streaky. He is 1 for 7 thus year but at least he isn't forcing shots. Domask is our 2nd best player college player and its not close. So yes we will be fine as long as he doesn't get hurt and keeps getting better. He is every game. I hope others do too.

Hawkins had three solid blocks and at least two steals or disrupted passes that resulted in turnovers. Give credit where credit is due.

I thought so to but Marquette was great at getting a quick basket

The offensive flow seems to have no one in the paint most of the time. The two wings stand in the corner and wait for the pass to enable a 3 point shot particularly in the first half.

hate to say it, but i've felt like the Krush has been like this for years now. My theory is a long period of mediocrity that gave little to cheer about sapped the culture out of the Krush. We went through entire 4 year periods where very few/no remaining students experienced the intensity and intimidation of high level D1 basketball games and, now that we're relevant again, the culture hasn't come back yet. hopefully it comes back with time, but i entirely agree that we can and should be at the same level as any other program in the country from that respect, just need some leadership to show them how it's done.

I never said he didn't have some a few good plays. I just said he didn't play well and forces things at times. It was reported by every reporter there i read or listened to! I highly doubt Hawkins himself thinks he played well or is happy with his performance and needs to do more than he has over the last 3 games. He played well vs Kansas and that is what is needed from someone with his skill set somewhat consistently. Especially if he wants to play in the NBA and I think he knows that too. Do you think he played well and that's what we need from him night in and night out? He had some good plays over 30 minutes but he was soundly out played by Ighodoro. Hawkins knows what he needs to do and I hope he can do it.

If you watch, many of Hawkins blocks are from behind & a major reason for that is how often he gets beat off the dribble & is chasing. I was always taught good defense is staying between your man & the basket...:) He does have the athleticism & length to often make up for it though, which is a big reason for the number of blocks he gets.

Yet Brad says, "I have no problem with the way Coleman is playing." SMDH.
Sorry, but I'll be the "body language guy" again....

Watch the post game presser with Brad. Typically he mostly looks at the reporter who asks the question, glances at the stat sheet, maybe a random glance elsewhere.... But watch when he was asked about Coleman. It was entirely different, even in his verbal response.

I think Brad has much more frustration with Coleman than his is letting on.

To me kolek reminded me of John Paxton but with more physicality. I was surprised he could go over Domask at the basket. Just a really smart player.

Maybe they could hold a once a year "Orange Crush Reunion" game. Organize it as a fund raising event and make it a good opponent. ?? Makes sense some of the "new" Crush have not experienced the glory days, so let's show them!!!

1)When Marquette scored the ball bounced around on the floor several times, some Illini loped over and waited for someone else to pick it up and toss it in.
When Illinois scored the Marquette player closest picked it up and threw it to a fast guard who sprinted/passed it up the floor looking for an easy shot.

2) Marquette's big center scored several times on isolations against Hawkins. Hawkins set up low because he couldn't shoot from outside. He drove down to the spot Hawkins gave him, made a couple of moves and scored.
Underwood said that when Dain came in Marquette went small and doubled him, so they couldn't play Dain.
Hawkins mostly hung out at the top of the key. When he penetrated he passed to someone else.

3) Lots of talk about Marquette playing together for years
Underwood thinks "Getting old" is bringing senior strangers together to meet for the first time in the summer, and recruiting a couple of freshmen

We were outcoached IMHO

We need to get DGL going, we miss his speed and quickness. Really missed Sincere in this one. Nobody could slow down Kolek. Much improved shooting and I really like the improvement by Shannon on the 3 ball. Should be a fun year. Marquette is a top 5 team for real.
Don’t understand Marcus guarding him. Why not Ty? Not sure anyone could stop him but it would have been big to keep him out of the lane.
