Jordan Goodwin commits to SLU

No, it's not a blessing in disguise. He was a much wanted recruit, this is a blow to the future of the team.

It's not a killer, but it's a blow. The staff's recruitment of Goodwin shows how much they wanted him and thought he was integral.

So I guess you would say it's not ideal, but not a dagger in the heart of the program?

Guys give me a combo guards that can hit the 3 and long wings and I'm good. JCL and Jordan can hit the 3, Kipper, DJ, and Pickett are the true wings.

Give me another 5th year big in the mold of Mclaren or Thorne. Pair him with Tilmon.

Agreed. Kid has skills, and several offers to high major programs. Why waste that at SLU? Well, I know why, but still...

It surprised me that his final list didn't include Texas and MSU. That was just as much of a shock. So, we realize that it wasn't about going to a blue blood, it wasn't about loyalty(to the staff that was recruiting him the hardest), it wasn't about helping the state school get back to its glory years, it was about him getting the most PT from day one and being sold promises and whatever else.

Sigh. He's a kid though. All you can do is shake your head.

I think that when we see Kipper on the court we will forget all about this one. In the meantime, still plenty of good guards out there. They may not have that toughness that Goodwin has but theres others with great skill and legitimate NBA potential that we have a shot at.

If Kipper gets to the level that Warren Carter got to, then this'll be a great steal. Warren also came with little accolades but he developed over time to be a productive upperclassman.

I am not a SLU fan at all and have been a life long Illini fan, but I'm surprised at the number of posters that act like SLU is in a class lower than MO Valley. Many have probably forgotten that just a few years ago (in 2012), SLU ended up 17th in the country while we were 82nd. I agree with all that he missed a great opportunity at UI but if you're not familiar with them, don't trash them just because they stole a prized recruit at the last minute. Majerus had some good years there.

I wanted him to come, because Groce did. I will likely never see him play basketball, even on accident.

I assume you mean Groce, not Goodwin. They're both JG.

It stings because of what he had said for the past year and a half but lets not forget he was not the recruit Groce had to have. TILMON!! is the young mans name and he got him. Groce now needs another PG and it looks good in that regard. Coach Groce is putting this program back where it belongs and Williams and Pickett will be a big part of this process also. Illini are in very good shape for the future with still another schlorship to hand out beside Frazier. His loss not Illini's. This team has a lot of very good players to build around. Futures bright!!!

So he had to take care of his family huh? If that's the case, he made a huge mistake compared to the money he can make by making the NBA. Groce and the resources and exposure he gets at the University of Illinois is order of magnitudes better than what SLU can provide. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Ford abandons ship after a couple good seasons and go to a power 5 conference. And for all those comparisons to Marcus Smart, Smart was a top 10 recruit and a McDonald's All-American. I'll eat my shoe if Goodwin even comes close to sniffing the NBA as a PG. What a myopic decision and I hope it comes to bite him when it's all played out.
